    4870 Overclocking Thread

So since there wasn't one of these I figured I would start it.

This is my first oc above 790 and I have great results. I have yet to receive my 2nd 4870 back from RMA so I will definitely have some more additions to this thread

ORB link for comfirm and other system specs

Note: Others to post please follow this format, you do not have to use extreme preset but you get the picture

Could you tell me about the used softwares? I edited every clock with RBE but GPZ-U still show 750Hmz and my 3dMark score proof is. (Sapphire 4870) Should I uninstall CCC?

Hi Sniipe Dogg. Was all this on stock volts and stock cooler? Did you change thermal paste at all? What was fan speed at? Temps for idle/load at those settings?

As well, what did you do to thoroughly test the card for stability and artifacts? Have you tried higher? How does the card respond exactly when it becomes unstable?

Sorry for the myriad of questions, just very curious is all as I have my eyes set on this card. Thank you.

Here's mine so far, have gotten it running higher but the heat's high at 870/4500...

I don't own Vantage, so I can't post a bench of that. I have thoroughly tested the card for stability and whatnot, though. This is all on the stock cooler with no thermal paste change, 46-47c idle. Fan speed is at 37% for idle (at 49c it turns up), and 45% then, 54% at 55c, with the rest of the profile set to high temps that it doesn't reach. When it becomes unstable it just makes a kind of squarish artifact grid full-screen, for a split-second, and then the display goes black.

well, i'm really tempted to use rbe again but i dont want to have the card running with max volts in 2d.... its just not going to be healthy imo... i might be wrong....
as soon as we know which clocks effect which state, i'll be pushing my cards again....
by the way, if you've worked some of these out, let me know..... thanks in advance....

you must first flash to stock bios, the uncheck ati overdrive, then flash to the OC'ed clocks and you should be all set

Stock volts, stock cooler. MX-2 on the GPU. fan profile set through graph: low=40 high=70 minfan%=20. I am about to try higher in the next 30 mins or so. It hasnt become unstable yet so i have no idea how it responds

the voltage never changes evwen in stock bios and 2d clocks, all your changing is a slight amount and its not like the gpu is running at load all the time so your not getting a ton of heat

    pretty impressive.

So this is all at stock voltage? Has anyone measured the actual vGPU? It's listed as 1.263v in the BIOS.

as far as i know these are stock volts 100% I can't wait to volt mod though

Check out my thread here (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=192654) and at hardforum (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1319500) for some benches before/after between a couple of overclocks.

After seeing the results here I tried my 4870 at 840mhz and it did it easily:

Sorry, no 3Dmark results as I don't usually bother with those. I did see a nice jump in ingame framerates though, much more then I was expecting.

I don't think I will push it much more until 3rd party OC tools and waterblocks are available though.

I strongly suggest that you all test for artifacts with ATI tool, this ram is only specced to run at 4ghz. When I run at 1050 or even 1020 I get artifacts and if your card is in fact artifacting you are slowly killing the RAM. now I am back at 1000 and I get no artifacts after 45 mins of artifact test.

I get no artifacts on the ram at 1100 or 4400, whatever you wanna call it, I teste with ati tool for about 15 mins and no errors, I believe it is the heat that might give you artifacts on at those speeds, but this ram seems to be perfectly capable of 4400, I set my fan speed at 37% and it idles at 49-50c and never breaks 62c under load. I have it running at 840/1100 with the bios flash and fan speed edited. at 850 I did get artifacts in crysis only at very high, so now at 840 I do not get any artifacts. here is a vantage screenshot with my gpu at 840/1100, and q9450 at 3680mhz.

lol I tried the medusa demo crack and it actually worked but half way through I started getting glitches.

...waterblocks are available for a long long time, since you can use the same as for the x19xx and HD38xx series. I find the best performance/value ist the Zalman ZM-GWB3 in combination with MX-2 thermal paste.
