I woke up this morning, started up my system like usual, but apparantly something had gone wrong shutting it down (not that I can remember anything going wrong, but hey, this is Windows) so it started up with checkdisk. Now I think quite a few people will know that checkdisk usually worsens <any> problem you <might> have, so I usually just skip the test and go straight into Windows. Not this time, for some stupid reason I couldn't use the keyboard to disable the disk check.

Now guess what... Checkdisk ran, now I am stuck with a corrupt Windows install. So I thought: bugger, I need to reinstall. I first tried startup-repair. Nothing. Then system restore: nothing. Manual system restore: nothing. Apparantly checkdisk managed to ruin my bootsector. So I then took my spare 20GB Quantum Fireball (in fact I have ~10 of them, none of them ever failed on me) with the spare OS for troubleshooting installed on it and booted up. Whew, all the disks are accessible. So off I went to copy my data to the external drive when... Oh F*CK, checkdisk corrupted my external disk. It had ALL my backups onto it. WHY OH WHY RUN THAT @#$^%&^(#@$%!@#$%#$%# checkdisk if nothing is going on!

So now I don't really know what to do. I can either void the warranty of my external disk and put the disk in on of my systems directly, hoping that all my data is still accessible (which I am not sure of) or I can just return it to my retailer hoping that I get a replacement, but still losing my data. I am backing up my data to every system available on the network. Having 2TB of data really is a pain if something goes wrong. Thank goodness for gigabit networking equipment.

Woke up this morning, everything is either dead or had its OS corrupted. Mithril is TECHNICALLY fine, but its CPU block won't fit, so I have to wait till NoL sends me the GTX...

Boot up my kids' rig, it boots, and the video card dies. RMA time for me...

Wife's main and laptop are corrupted. Will have to try and find my OS disks tonight...

So we're down to one computer. Joy.

When you get that many hits at one time my first guess would be a power surge/dip - unless you have everything on a UPS. Second guess would be a virus/trojan/malware. What firewall and a/v do you use? Power problems shouldn't affect laptop though - unless it was a killer surge.

Well, Mithril is OK. It's just not able to boot without CPU cooling.

Turns out it was a bad update. I'm working on a new OS as we speak.

    *bleep* It's morning.

Day off. Pressure test a block, try to boot/photograph Mithril. May attack with a Dremel again.

Got some rigs up again, have to reinstall WCG. Also need to bend copper tubing, and clean mess kids made.

    Where coffee is?

Too much work - rent a sand blaster. It's like mixing up a batch of epoxy - you never realize how much stuff needs gluing until you look around a little. Once you're done with the trailer, there's the fence, the shutters, the neighbors mailbox . . .

BTW, how's the missus? Would she mind your starting a thread?
