    Need help ergently....:(

I'm having some comp probs so i'll list important specs first...
    xp3000+ clocks to 2.4-2.45 easy
abit nf7-s 2.0 runs 220fsb+ DC sync no problem
    2x256 Twinmos 3200 (1 bh-5, 1 ch-5)
Hercules 9700 pro (350/675) will run 400/700 stable
    Maxtor ata133 40gb
    Enermax eg-465

For the last couple days my system is not restarting/rebooting right away and kinda just hangs for awile. I haven't noticed anything weird to cause this so i'm not sure what's going on. Another thing is my dvd-rom and cdrw aren't working properly. I first noticed with my cdrw a couple months ago would lock up my system when I tried to burn a cd, or not even find a disk when inserted. Just using the thing would make my system start running like crap. Then the other night my dvd player kept changing speeds and locked up on my also. I tried switching a different ide cable but had the same problem. I have good cooling and my system stays very cool all the time. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm stumped .

Simple answer really... u need new CD / DVD Drives... mine has just started doing the same... unless it's summat to do with nForce drivers but they don't update themselves, so, have u recently changed drivers?

Check event viewer for errors and maybe reinstall your burner and/or check makers site for updates ....good place to start. If they are dying, the good news is that they will be cheaper than they have ever been to replace.

My 16x10 Pionner died after 2 years of good wrk for me about 2 weeks after i put it in my nf2 board.....but it had done its job and gave the 1000's of hours that the manufacturer said it would...
So i would agree w/ Marci and say its prob just time for a new one! .
..i know but if you were spinnin at 5000rpm's for a couple years you'd wanna quit too!!!

well this is what I did since my last post....

    flashed to bios 18,
    updated nforce2 drivers,
    updated omega drivers...

and it's still lagging on restart/reboot. I can't do anything while it's doing this but close pages if any are open. If I try and open a program or anything it tells me I can't because windows is shutting down. I can boot in like 45secs, but takes at least 2mins to shutdown . Anyone else have any ideas? Maybe repair windows?

Maybe you should run the optical drives on a different controller to make sure the mobo isn't to blame...

how do I run chkdsk with the /f option in winxp? I tried running chkdsk from cmd and the first time it removed a registry line and says it found problems with the file system and should be run with the /f option. I tried and it told me that the volume is in use by another process and should be run later.

It should run at next reboot. If not, go into dos and try the command again and then reboot.

k i ran it and once getting back in windows my usb mouse and kb wouldn't work. I unplugged the kb and plugged it back in and it worked fine, and then when I rebooted it did right away . Now i'm writing this just after running chkdsk in cmd and it told me to run the chkdsk /F to fix all the stuff it said it needed to recover. It also corrected errors in the master file table, and volume bitmap. I don't have a clue what these mean but it sure seemed like it was showing more then a couple problems. How do I run chkdsk and fix?

just rebooted after I posted this and back to the ole 2 min shutdown . This is starting to feel like i'm on my old p3 450 again, instead of a 3000+ running duel channel memory .

Just go back to dos prompt and type "chkdsk /F " then reboot.

Are you using Norton internet security 2002 or 2003 and Roxio burner software?

no i'm using norton anti-virus 2002 and nero5. No matter how many times I do chkdsk I still come up with errors when running it, even if I do a /F. It seems like the problems keep coming back. I did it and it said nothing was wrong, I boot and do a /F and then it comes back with a bunch of errors when I tried in windows . Would maybe doing a repair of XP help?

Re pair is worth a try if you are setup to do it? If not try just reinstalling windows overtop your old install without reformatting, that way you don't loose any info.

If it has repaired the errors and they keep coming back, it looks like your drive may be on it's way out I'm afraid.

    Get your data backed up!
I've heard it all, I've seen it all, I've done it all. I just don't remember any of it.

Norton has a hell of a time recovering after a few files get messed up.....resulting in slooooooow boots and shut downs. Manually shut down Norton in Task Manager (all of it) an see if you don't shut down quicker.

I used Norton for years, but as soon as I started using XP I started having problems and have switched to Ontrack. Great software with many features other than virus protection.
