Asus Striker II Extreme: Corruption/Freezes Troubleshooting Thread

    Hello everybody,

I've noticed that there are lots of you with corruption and/or video freezing issues with the Asus Striker II Extreme, so I decided to help you as much as I can to get your issues sorted.
But to "allow" me to help you, you need to help me first.
In the next post you'll find a "template" which you'll have to use to report your system specs & settings ( in detail ) to me, so I can check them out and start troubleshooting your issues individually.
It looks like I'm asking you to fill a big list of settings, but believe me, it's worth it.
Please do not bother posting if you're going to ignore my "requirements" ( check the next post ) and say that you do "fulfill" them.
The best way to troubleshoot and hopefully solve a problem, is to analyze the specs & configurations in detail. The greater the detail and the more chances you have to solve a problem. And this doesn't only apply to computer related only problems, but in every little ( or big ) thing in real-life as well.

This thread is only about the Striker II Extreme, so please do not post here if you have another nFORCE 790i motherboard, it will only make things more complicated, and will derail the thread.

If you're going to post and try to work with me here to get those corruption and/or freezing issues ironed out, please use the template found in the next post

p.s. If you're using the "Auto" setting, report the value set by the motherboard ( some of them have a "current setting" next to them, displaying what the motherboard is using )

p.s.1. I'm no longer providing support for this product.

p.s.2. If you're from nVIDIA or Asus, your product ( 790i chipset & Striker II series ) sucks!

p.s.3. It's "stable" slim, not "estable"

    p.s.4. Have fun!

I'm having system freezes when watching videos with Media Player Classic and VLC player whenever SLI is enabled. ~20 secs after I started the movie/video, it will freeze, a beep will sound and restarting is the only solution.
    I have tried BIOS 0703, 0704, 0801. Codecs 3.9.0 and 3.9.5 also different SLI bridge and GeForce drivers 169.21 WHQL, 174.74BETA, 175.16WHQL and 175.80

    PLEASE HELP

Template edited, was missing the necessary drivers information
Will try your settings and tell you my results.

A first quick note... you're pumping a lot voltage for relatively low clocks for a 2GB D9GTR kit, and without a fan at ~1.9V your chips will be hot enough to error sometimes.
I'll be back with results, ideas, notes, etc

Slim, you forgot to report the values set by the board ( wherever you've chosen "Auto" ) [ in the Memory Timing Settings for example, if you choose Auto for some timings, after you save & exit the BIOS, enter the BIOS again, go to the Memory Timing Settings menu, and report the timings set by the board ( they're on the right column under "Current" )

Slim, 10 minutes and still playing here.
Only difference between my settings and yours are:
Core 2 Duo E8400 instead of Q9450 ( will check them out with the QX9650 later on )
Memory Sub-timings ( Auto settings on your RAM, will more than likely be different than my Auto settings ).

Edit your post and show me the timings set by your board where you've selected Auto.

1.90vdimm is what the stock voltage is. I have it in 1.86v because in idle it gives me 1.90 but in load it gives 1.94v so overvoltage is always present no matter what, and yes they do get hot. I dont have any fan on top because I dont want to interfere with the CPU airflow.

Im having a problem right now. I install XP but when I try to install nForce drivers, it will always get stuck at ethernet drivers for some reason. I thought I had a virus so I tried installing NOD32 and it will also get stuck while installing the new files. Did the dam board just killed my raptor? I will have my old 15gb IDE drive installed to test and see, if it did killed my raptor... Im going to set my board on fire.

A fan over the RAMs will not interfere with the CPU fan most of the times, simply because they'll be pulling more "cold" air near the CPU fan's intake, and the CPU fan will benefit from that

I only have the dominator fans though, and they push air down so I got rid of them, and also the dominators fan covers half of the CPU fan making less air move into the TR 120 Extreme. Im just trying to have the best CPU air flow since its what matters most.

I'm using the dominator airflow as well, and it's not a problem.
It doesn't affect the TRUE120's performance much... actually just a tad, the difference ain't big enough to cut any MHz of your CPU overclock.
1.9V RAM without cooling, and the summer temps... especially in Florida... I wouldn't recommend that at all.
Even if it's not enough to kill them, it can degrade the memories after prolonged hot-running periods.

Yeah you are right but is not my fault that this pos gives out more voltages than it should. Besides I really want to change this RAm to the Pi series specially because of the temps.

Im still testing my system on why the nForce ethernet drivers wont install and why my programs wont run properly. I dont know if my Raptor just died...
Anyways here it goes the missing info
    GeForce 175.16 WHQL
    nForce 9.64 (ALL)
Sound card drivers Auzentech Prelude RC5-1 Patch 1.0

Yeah I know, I will do that as soon as I finish my last try trying to fix this dam ethernet driver that wont freakin install.

Is there any driver (NOT from nvidia) that will make ethernet ports work? I really need internet here... Im using old striker computer.

You can try installing the latest drivers from Marvell's website ( I don't think that'll work though ).
The fact that you cannot install or run some software means instability though.

p.s. Do not install nVIDIA's MediaShield and Network Access Manager

Crap, Well anyways, As I posted in the Other thread, Mainly Data Corruption or System Lockups at Idle. It will pass OCCT/Prime95 just fine, But When Idling at Desktop, It will just lockup.

You can start by setting your VTT Voltage at 1.4V NB Voltage at 1.56V and SB Voltage at 1.6V and your Memory Voltage to 1.76V

Are you using Windows Vista with DreamScene enabled & running ?

Good thread to share the exact BIOS setting so that we can help each other out. In other news, I am having problems with my replacement board, but I didn't have much time to try hard enough. Also, I am not happy with the case that I bought(v2110b). The air flow is really crappy. Sorry about going offtopic.

As soon as I finish some stuff that are top priority for me this week, I'll post some configurations that I've tested and work fine so you can try them out.

    Problem Description
Never ever had a corruption issue (touch wood), but i have never been able to use SLI without a freeze (in games, i can run vista as long as i like without freezing with SLI). The GTLrefs and voltages that i have there allow me to use one card with no freezing in games, but i still get freezes in movies, although it takes an hour or two. If i move those GTLrefs up or down, i dont get the freeze, but it will stutter when it would normally freeze for about, 1-2 seconds, then continue like nothing happened. With all settings Auto i get cant play games, as it freezes. Tried overclocking too, still no corruption but no improvement in SLI freeze, so ill just wait until ive solved SLI before i overclock.

Guys, whether you set the timings manually or automatically ( auto ) I need the values applied by the motherboard.
Once you've saved your settings & exited BIOS, enter the BIOS after the restart and note the values listed under the "Current" line, and report them to me instead of typing "Auto" next to the memory timings ( I'm talking about all the memory & chipset timings, not the main RAM timings only )

    Example:

I need the values listed in the green circle

No I'm not running Vista, I'm running XP. I'll try those settings soon, Isn't raising the VTT to 1.4 dangerous?
