I think you have clocked up 2,282 in less time than me by talking crap and spamming threads.
    consider the following -
the velicoiraptor still offers only half the performance necessary to saturate SATAII

and it's burst speed is still below the 150mb/s of SATAI

the drive is faster because it uses smaller denser platters and as such the head not only has to move less while seeking data, but it also passes over more data with each revolution of the platter.

As far as I know the ssd only outperforms the raptor in seek times and not in read/write.

that would be due to the SATA1 interface right?

toss that onto an SATA interface and watch it have roughly 30% better read/write than the Vraptor...

But will that drive have exactly the same performance on sata&sataII. has anyone ever tested?

no it'd be bottlenecked on SATAI since it exceeds it.
but even with such a restraint, it's still faster than a raptor on SATAIIas far as read/write performance goes.

for consumer HARDDRIVES the interface really doesn't matter.

DFI BP: why/where do u get ur info from?

a number of us have stated why/where that a change in interface does not mean the medium becomes faster, but u havent

the notion that a storage medium becomes faster as its interface is 'upgraded' is... confusing

to me, thats like saying that... example:

    u sit on a 50cc scooter.
    it does 60km/h max.
that scooter's max speed aint going whether u are provided with 1 lane or 100 lanes.

    u follow?

2TB bit overkill imo, but sweet. There is a market for it, for those people who love to record every crap show, or stream dvd/blu ray disc over network. Call me old fashioned, but i prefer to burn dvd disc and have them on my shelf with printed sleeves and disc

As to using up 2TB, we may not be used to such capacities now, but in time we'll be begging for more. Someone mentioned it earlier, but with higher video resolutions(BlueRay), bigger games, and us just storing up more crap(just because we can), it won't be long.

I would love to have a massive HDD in my enclosure in which I can store backup images of OS setups, plus have room for my media storage.

I wouldn't mind having a 2TB HDD already so I wouldn't have to use 6 HDDs. But I don't like buying the biggest sized HDDs but best capacity/price ones which is probably 1TB HDDs by that time.

    Read his analogy again:

1 50cc Scooter will not go faster if you take it from a 1 lane highway and put it in a 100 lane highway.

A VR is not close to saturating a SATA1 interface, so yes "THE PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT IS NOT BECAUSE OF CHANGE OF INTERFACE."

Just FYI a little piece of random knowledge I picked up somewhere one day - drive specifications actually put height restrictions on drives. With our current technology, no we could not manufacture a 2TB drive which would conform to those specifications.

Likely all they need is just a process shrink though, it's not strictly speaking necessary for them to add extra platter density... though it's far more likely to me that they would.

With 500gig notebook HDDs currently available, I thought 2tb in a desktop 3.5" drive would be no problem? There are already drives with 5 platters, a 5x 320gig platters would be a 1.5tb drive, and surely they can increase data density a lot more than 320gig per platter if they can fit 500gigs in a notebook drive? Or are the notebook drives 2x 250gig platters or something?

Anywhoo yay for more storage \o/ HD BSG is going to take its toll on my Storage
