QFT! A 2,5" device with an überfast 32GB SSD for OS and programs and a single 250GB 2,5" HDD platter would be the best of both worlds... and shouldn't cost much more than 500$.

Better option would be 2x 16 GB SSD's in Raid 0 for higher bandwith.

See what i'd like is two 8GB drives and run them in RAID 0...then just throw in a 320GB SATA for files and what not.

Is the price still roughly $30/Gig? That doesn't seem all that bad compared to the price needed to form an equivalent SSD array of 160GB.

I must admit Im not 100% sure that I've got it right, but once I got a verbal explaination.... Larger SSD's are faster.... Dont remember exactly why... Was one of the times I got pwned by a engineer at Cebit, hehe...

That's not completely true, but they did say that earlier revisions/versions wouldn't be able to do so. The version that they will be shipping somewhere in the second half of 2008 will support this though (as well as most popular OSs).

Anyone knows how to make RAID 0 using USB with no converter to SATA?
I am thinking of "raid-ing" 3 Patriot 150X flash drives to see what they would be like for windows, also each device will have it's own port so are there any limitations using the USB interface?
If we were to live in a perfect theoretical world I should be getting ~80 mb/s with under 1ms seek time and dead silence but since we are not and most probably I overlooked smth I could be wrong...

Essentially, the reason could only be the driver. A different type of driver is required for text mode (boot from) vs. UI mode (just use the space).
Hardware wise they'd be stupid to not make this possible right away...

Yeah I think it was something firmware related, I don't think it will be to hard to find more details on this. For me it's time to go to bed now though .

That doesnt matter much actually. On traditional HDs you are far from the max speeds almost all the time due to seek issues. In worst times it might only be 5-10% of its peak potential.

The 100-1000x improvement in seek time is the killer. The reason your OS boot 5-10x faster, apps/games load and so on.

The amount of manufacturers that make SSDs dont control the prices. The NAND manufacturers do.

Until those prices change SSD prices wont change
You will if you're running Linux, which does in software what the SSD guys are charging their premium for.

    Yes, you are right.
But I noticed in various real life tests that while ssd's boot VERY fast, starting up various applications and games isn't much faster. On the other hand Vantage gaming and such test show a BIG improvement with SSDs.
What is the official and accepted explanation of this?
other than synthetic test aren't indicative of anything yet again...

They usually just load a single large stream. And yes, Vantage sucks incredible much. More than 3Dmark..and that sucked alot.

Well after doing a little bit of testing with SSD's I've noticed that R/W speeds of small blocks (about 16 kb or smaller) on SSDs is painfully slow... Up to 3-4 times slower than a similar mechanical drive. In short my findings where that SSD's are exceptional for randoms seeks, on par (if not better) in large file R/W, and crummy for small file R/W. Result: SSD performance is all over the place... And whether you'll benefit from upgrading to SSD depends largely on what kind of apps you'll be running.
