    Question on mounting pumps

    I have a question on the best way to mount some pumps. I am doing a couple of water cooling rigs and one of the main things I want to accomplish is keep it as quiet as possible, (though not through completely sacrificing my OC ability).

    I have a couple of XSPC Res capped Swiftys I am going to use (355s to be exact). I thought about just bolting it to the case, using Petra's gel stuff, some foam, etc...

    I remember seeing a fairly interesting mod to stop hard drive noise involving using some bungee cord to hang 3.5" drives in standard drive bays, and was wondering if anyone had tried that with pumps?

    My two main concerns are noise and case vibration, and making sure the pumps don't overheat if I lay them on something like the gel stuff. I am sure that stuff nullifies vibration, but does it act as a thermal blanket for the pump?

    Anyways, I think you see what I am getting at. If it makes any diff, one case is a MM U2-UFO and the other is a Cosmos S.

    One other thing. I know the RD20s are loud. Would any of this stuff help on an Iwaki, or is it mainly the impeller making the noise so it would be minimal return on effort?

    when they're on continuously for a while, the ddc tends to get rather hot. i put gel stuff underneath it and it melted fairly fast.

    incidentally, the gel stuff is just gel wax, and can be bought by the kilo really cheaply from candle making suppliers. it doesnt seem to be burn, but it will melt and drip over stuff.

    ive also tried putting a copper block under my ddc between it and the gel, this melts the gel just the same after a while. its worth noting that the block was practically too hot to touch. (im a chef and ive asbestos fingers, so it was pretty damn hot)

    in my next config, the pumps are getting watercooled too.

    i used 2 of the "Vibration-Damping Sandwich Mounts" for my D5. check out at McMaster-car part number 9213k12 or page 1350

    if you have room see pic attached.

    you could feel the pump running by touching it but not the case. very quiet.

    My own way to mount (you can see in my worklog in sig) is to have a custom lasercut 3 1/2" bay mount then I fixed the MCP355 pump on it using 2 rubber mounts I took from a Eheim pump mount kit. You can also use it from the Zalman HD 5 1/4" bay kit which include 4 rubber mounts. I barely hear or feel any vibration and the only way to see if it is running fine is to touch the pump or bring the ear close

    I'm good with technical drawings but this doesn't make sense at all. A rubber mount is uncoupled in the middle so the softness will make the pump lean on the metal plate and that defeat the purpose

    Guess that depends on the durometer of the rubber. The ones that he chose are quite ridgid. (maybe too much to actually remove the vibrations)

    That's precisely the problem. To get stiffer, we need to go to urethane and this is pretty rigid, enough to still conduct vibrations.

    With a D5, sitting on the gel pad is the best bet since the mount point isn't hot. With a DDC, you need to uncouple and that's where using rubber mounts will work fine (the legs is on opposite sides so it won't really lean unless tubing force you in a certain direction).

    I had the same problem with my first set of pumps so being a machinist with a background in sheetmetal I designed a bracket that would hold the pump at just about any angle and would also effectively reduce the vibration. My (UN)Designs Absolute pump bracket uses the stock rubber grommets that came with your 355 and allows you to mount it almost anywhere. Check out the pic in the link.
