if you consider price difference between 1 and 2 GB of memory, and the fact that Atom would do well with the slowest DDR2, it's really sad that ASUS equipped this box with just one gig!
    BTW
does it have any HD video capabilities!?

It looks good. Powerful enough too--but I'm not a big fan of the Atom processor. I'd rather they drop in a Celeron M or something--you don't even need an ULV chip--you have more space in this for an aluminum heatsink and small fan.

Depending on the price of these things, they're probably pretty good buys for those who are still running really old computers and need nothing more, or those who really just want a cheap PC to use the internet and instant messaging. My uncle runs a half dozen PII 400s, so a computer like this would be enough power for today and tomorrow but not too expensive or too power-hungry.

It's pointless calling this thing HTPC (Home Theater PC) when we all know that 945 can't deliver any Home Theater experience and Atom will probably choke with it! For Internet Browsing, e-mailing, and file DL-ing there are much cheaper, and thus better solutions!

Only thing that'll sell this crap is marketing hype that'll persuade people to buy what they really don't need, just like with eeePC… who the hell does need that "thing" and what can one RELLY do with it?!

All the PC enthusiasts and early adopters who know what they're doing tricked!?!?!

It's not for all that c**p--it's for browsing the internet and using an instant messenger. Not everyone needs a 3kg brick to launch Firefox and AIM, take notes in class, or read e-mail. Things like the Eee PC can do the basic tasks a full-size PC can do. I'm going to get one so I'm not tied to a chair to use the internet--I'd rather just use something that weighs in at 1kg and I can put anywhere.

I can see my mum making toast and tea in a hurry and having one of these in the kitchen. She could send me an email and feed my sister's kid at the same moment. Something like that. Plus no MS junk for me to have to support.

Yes! 'cos if they really knew what they really want this kind of device for (Browsing and e-mailing), they would go with something cheaper based on C7, or Geode!
Still fact remains, this is not HTPC 'cos it lacks some basic elements that HTPC must have!

Hello office PC These would make for fantastic office PCs for your average paper pusher. Sure it doesn't have enough grunt for a proper workstation, but I imagine for MS Office + email + interwebs it'd be fine.

That's the type of thing these are for--basically they're office machines and light-load home machines. MS Office, email, and the 'net are all fine--though I hear that YouTube shows some shuttering.

The Celeron M ULV, as it is, is pushing it for low-end. I'd like to see some more benchmarks between Celeron M, C7, Geode, and the future Atom systems...

It's not supposed to be a HTPC--beyond listening to MP3s/MP4s/MP4As and syncing the oh-so-popular iPods. It's there for the web and regular "every-day" use. I would like to see a single PCI slot on it or something (like an ExpressCard slot, standardize the equipment between laptops and the Eee Box)--it would be pretty cool to have someone figure out a TV tuner, or have one incorporated on it like an Apple TV. I think many would be willing to pay a bit of a premium for an Eee Box with a TV tuner and all that other fun stuff, and have Asus include good setup guides...
