Some AMD users will end up with Endless reboots in SP3

Installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 sends some PCs into an endless series of reboots, according to posts to a Microsoft support forum.

Jesper Johansson, a former program manager for security policy at Microsoft and a prominent Windows blogger, has worked with users to tentatively identify the problem as involving only machines using processors from Advanced Micro Devices.

Messages from frustrated users began accumulating on the XP SP3 support newsgroup Wednesday, just a day after Microsoft released the update to the general public.

"I just installed Windows XP SP3 and after completing the processes and when the system reboots, the system cannot proceed to load the Windows," said a user labeled as "Olin" in a message that kicked off a long thread. "It just displays the flash screen of Windows then after it reboots again.

Most users who left messages on the forum said that they were unable to boot into Windows Safe mode.

Same here, I'm having no problems with SP3 on this socket 939 machine...
EDIT: maybe the thread title should be changed into something like: "AMD users might end up with Endless reboots in SP3"

I'm not sure what the problem is, My room mate has a older AMD Sempron and has shutdown issues with SP3. But I'm just reporting news.

It's happening mainly on systems (HP/Dell) that use the same image for AMD/Intel machines at the factory.

"Because the image for both Intel and AMD is the same all have the intelppm.sys driver installed and running. That driver provides power management on Intel-based computers. On an AMD-based computer, amdk8.sys provides the same functionality. "

    Easy fix available.

Yep it hits S939, if you have an Asus A8n32-SLI.
My Dad's rig went down last night while he was in the process of installing SP3. After he installed SP3 he restarted... BSOD.
Can't get into XP at all, it even BSOD's in safe mode.
Was reading about this problem tonight on the MS site, there's been problems with installing SP3 on this mobo since last November, way to go MS!

I just did a fresh install and grabbed sp3 while I was at it and have had no problems with it on my Crosshair with an X2 5200. Then again I did just take Vista off of it so even if I did it would still be better.

I really despise these kind of headlines... the AMD CPU is not the culprit... bad programming on the SP3 team is the culprit for not correctly recognizing the CPU and installing the correct kernels and drivers. One would not expect (based on the rumored explanations) that an Intel power management driver would work on an AMD CPU and vice versa....

Scare tactics and FUD I say....

S939 was an excellent platform, in 2005 nothing could beat it.

Unless that person is using anything older than a 486, I am very certain it is not an AMD problem nor a Microsoft problem.

xp installed fine on my asus k8ne, with my good ol xp1600 athalon haha, and x800 xt agp rockn out. Its my dual boot xp, mintlinux box and it installed no prob, didnt even mess up, with the grub installed.

my other asrock old socket, with xp1500, and radeon 9600 crashed on me, but i think it was the super out dated drivers on it, that failed with sp3, as it would boot, but would shut off the monitor aka gfx card. rolled that one back to xp sp2, and its fine again, will probably format when it fails, and try sp3 again, but i mean on that box i m not too worried hehe.

my bro s s939 fx board is doing ok.

So i wonder is it that oem dll issue, to do with powermanagement?

Driver Issues are not hardware flaws
at the same Time some driver information would be helpful for finding out specifically what is the problem

Isn't this where somebody should say why haven't you upgraded to Vista yet?

I've had 1 BSOD. I caused it myself overclocking the PCI-E bus. Other than that, I've had no problems from Vista since the RC1 days.

Yes, I know there was a reboot cycle problem with Vista, but I just see no point in continuing to stick with a seven year old OS when there is better available.

I have two full versions of Vista 32 bit sitting right here that I won't use because of issues with my printer. I just bought the printer less than a year ago and HP will give me only basic driver support for it. Vista runs fine and I actaully like it until I plug my printer in, then all hell breaks loose. As far as Vista being better than Xp i don't agree with that at all. It is just another OS with more bells and whistles(most of which most people could care less for). I guess I am just stubborn and refuse to buy a new printer, NERO and other programs just to use it.
