i wouldnt go with walmart only because i bet those ac units probably use r134a and unless you are planin on gettin it recharged........ As far as the idea goes its a excelent way to chill water as long as your ready to combat condensation which will be plentiful. LoL as far a phase change goes this is probably only area i can help you in.

well buying a window unit is the cheapest and easiest way for anyone to start a chiller.
if you take your time you can make a nice chiller without breaking any tubes and without loosing any of the charge.

Instead of practising on a new one, see if you can find an old junker that still blows cold. If you break it, you had some experience and it cost you nothing, then get a new one. I see them in the paper for free, you haul away because the dump won't take them because they won't pay to release the gases by epa guide lines.

That's what I'm doing with this one, when I get time. It still blows very cold air. Needs to be gutted and cleaned up...hopefully without leaking the charge.

Yeah....looks like a train wreck! lol but it works and what have I lost if I break it? I need practice straightening the lines without busting them, and other things too.

You can't see it in my pic, but it's where the cold air comes from in front. Instead of air it cools water. Take a look around the forum, there are lots of clear pics.

I wouldn't suggest a noob work with propane.
Yeah it's fuggly, but wait til I rip it out and clean it up....total cost = elbow grease.

Neighbor was throwing it out and trash guys would not take it because they aren't allowed to dump it without evac of freon first...so I volunteered to dispose of it for her.
