Difference between OEM and DSP OEI - OEM Vista x64?

What's the difference between the two?

Sorry, I'm a total n00b to vista....still on XP and XP x64.

The support microsoft provides, if they find out that you are using an OEM version, they will not provide you with support. You have to be firm with them in order to get support.

I bought the retail 32bit ver last year... the only advantage to that is you can order alt media 64bit for $10, your retail key is good for both...only one at a time though. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...a/default.mspx
but it costs more up front, and I did this before they started sellling 64bit oems...

I built a quad in Jan a couple months ago and just bought the 64bit oem I linked above... I really have no use for 32bit anymore... $99 free shipping is not a bad deal for 64bit home premium... IMO, home premium's your best value, it's bundled with media center..

here's the ver comparison: (I wouldn't bother with basic. Business is good if you're in on an office network, but IMO Home premium is the best home use value). ultimate is nice, but you'll pay for it..

I'm definitely getting an OEM version....undecided on which edition to get at this point....I'll make a decision on that later....certainly 64 bit.

What is OEM software?

OEM means “Original Equipment Manufacturer.” OEM software is a full version of a program used by system builders and computer manufacturers. It is identical to the Retail Box version, but does not include a manual, a box, or installation support from the manufacturer. Support is usually still available on the manufacturer’s web site or on a paid-per-incident basis. OEM versions will usually include the software in the form of a CD-ROM, the Certificate of Authenticity, the product key code, the license, and a registration card. If you buy a Microsoft OEM or DSP version that does not have all of these items, there is a good chance that the software is not authentic.

What is the difference between OEM and DSP software?

The software in both OEM versions and DSP versions is the same. OEM software normally has the hardware manufacturer’s name, such as Dell or Sony, printed on the manual and license. DSP software, however, has NO manufacturer’s name stamped on the manual or printed on the license. DSP versions usually just say “OEM.” Basically, DSP is a more generic packaging of an OEM product that is sold to smaller system builders who do not qualify for larger volume discounts and custom printing on their software.

Please note that OEM and DSP non-operating system software (such as Microsoft Office, Works Suite, WordPerfect, etc.) cannot be installed over a previous version as an Upgrade.

I didn't even know OEM isn't supported by the manufacturer but I still bought the OEM of vista ultimate 64 and it works like the normal retail version. I bought mine from newegg.com.

You'll get updates provided your OEM version is legit and not pirated...as long as you buy from a reputable store or e-tailer that shouldn't be a problem. OEM basically differs i that you don't get a manual or a box rather just the DVD or cd w/ software and a COA and/or product key.

I heard recently that, starting with XP, Windows O/S's come with only so many activations before you run out and have to contact Microsoft. (Free, I think.) I was on Windows' '98 up until a few months ago so... well, who knew? And this thread has me wondering if the OEM version differs in the # of activations or something else related to this (#$%!) feature?

I just didnt want to be left out in the cold without driver/security/ect updates
To me the 'remote desktop/media center/bit locker" is worth the extra $90
on a side note could you instal this copy on other machines and get a licence for an extra fee? or do you have to buy extras up front?

OEM 64 bit is the way to go if your machine supports it.
