2 q6600's, 1 to keep. Which batch date if you can only test one?

    both are SLACR (GO)

    L741A990

    or

    L746B022

i know back in the e6400 days the "B" ones were the ones to have (usually) is it the same now? i can most likely only test one of them, so if you guys were to pick, which would you choose?

Ah, that's a real toughie, both are pretty decent batches, but I would go the with L746, because the last three digits are lower, usually an indication of better clocking/lower VID.

That must be a new theory you got there... never ever heard of that being the golden tip

Testing can be done quite rapidly mate... pop it in and up FSB to 333FSB and try to get the lowest Vcore ( at or below the read out VID ) and check temps... I usually pick the one where the cores give about the same readings on the cores ( and preferably lowest temps too) and the one that does 3ghz with the lowest Vcore... OCCT or such only takes an hour to complete so... will take ya a few hours but at least you have some real values...

There's no golden rule (anymore) regarding A or B, Vid, wafer nr,... even CPU's of the same batch can clock totally different...

Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

Well, all of those getting the newer L803 and L804 batches seem to ALL have gotten bum luck on ocing/coupled with a 1.325 VID...
I'm going to take this back to Fry's and ask them to exchange it for one of the older light blue boxes or order an OEM from Newegg and hope they have some older batches in stock.

When it comes down to it, the batch date isnt really a huge help. Unless its a well known batch, its not going to mean that much. You need to check out what the vid of the auctual chip is, not what other people got.

And anyways, just about any G0 will do 3.6Ghz on good air or better.

L803/L804s have all been known to suck. They are very easily identified though, because they don't come in the traditional light blue box, but rather in a darker colored box similar to the 45nm chips.

ok in windows @ 3.0Ghz @ 1.250 volts, not bad too far, i think windows was being goofy because vista needed to install quad core driver. Will try OC'in again . also i cannot for the life of me find the quad core orthos, where did that bugger go on the net?

(or prime 95 quad core for vista, i dont care which, just would like one )

had just enough time to test the L741A, it had a VID of 1.325, and wouldn't do 3.6Ghz either, possibly something else in my board, as the L741A needed far more volts for 3.2Ghz than 1.25 like the L746B, which is what im going to keep.

The DS3L has mega VDroop, for instance I have to set 1.575 BIOS vcore to get 1.47 vcore under load in Windows. So don't be afraid to bump that vcore, temperatures permitting of course. Also you can try raising the vFSB and your vMCH for added stability. Good luck man.

1.3 bios = 1.25 windows (idle) = 1.22 or so load, not ABSOLUTELY terrible, and its stable @ 3.2, so ill leave it for a bit, then work on more Mhz later, the B chip seems to run much cooler/stable @ lower volts, so i think its the keeper.
