2Gb to 4GB woes

Hello,

You will see in my signature my computer specs. I have been running perfect with 2GB RAM for a year (Corsair Twin2x 2048-6400C4D). Since RAM prices are dropping I decided to buy another set of the exact same RAM and install to have 4 x 1gb dimms.

I am not doing any overclocking. Here are the current settings:

I have tried several different changes in BIOS, but nothing seems to be working. I have downloaded and installed the KB929777 update and still have the BSOD after about 5 minutes of gaming or 20-30minutes of other high stress activity (i.e. burning a dvd). So far, if I am just surfing the net, it remains stable.

Any assistance would be great... Thanks

All are working fine. I ran memtest86+ for 10 full passes with no errors. I am currently typing on the very computer that goes BSOD but it tends to only do it under high stress situations (i.e. gaming)

I tried changing that to 1.4v but had a BSOD very quickly once I logged into a game. I changed the HT Voltage back to auto and tried setting my DDR frequency to 667 instead of 800. It worked! my system is now stable, but at what cost to speed? Is lowering the frequency worth the 2gb of RAM?

If you are not OCing your CPU and you need the extra 2gb it won't be a big deal. A quad will make use of extra memory bandwidth but, if you need 2gb vs 4, that will benefit you more than just extra memory bandwidth and esp with your CPU at stock.

With 680i it is hit and miss. If the SPP and SPP termination voltages are set correctly for 4 modules, then most I have seen can do it. But, not all of them. It's up the the board, specifically the memory controller. The best option at this point, if the board cannot run 4 modules at DDR800 is 2 x 2gb modules.
