Now you see why these are XXX pics, look at all that filth. Have you ever seen so much spooge deposited in one place? I imagine after re-applying thermal paste numerous times, the ventilation hole could become obstructed. I'm not sure of the effects of this, but, I don't think it's there for the release of epoxy gases as I've read before. Since there's small gaps in the seal anyway.

In the photo after this one the IHS was lapped, which is why it doesn't resemble what you may have. But if your thinking of removing your heatspreader, then you've most likely lapped your your by now anyway. Don't ask me why. I've heard the difference is marginal, I beleive it was more curiosity, which motivated me to do this.

The Heatspreaderhas several "gaps" in the Epoxy, so it's not 100% sealed. I was lucky to find one on the corner. It does take quite a bit of time. If yoyur the bold type, I guess you could place a very small tipped screwdriver under there and pry. I muct confess I did this several times.

I managed to get mine off, by screwing a lot the lower screw of the prometeia cooling head

And instead of having better temps, I got something like +20C

So I opened it up and the integrated heatsink fell off

I have it now, without the heatsink, and that gave aprox +70Mhz

That's very funny, but effective. I haven't mounted it yet, how fragile is it? For example, I want to use the Thermalright SLK-947 which is similiar to the SLK900U, using stand-off's. So I wonder if it's not going to make good enough contact, OR will the core being slightly lower then the heatsink was designed for, now make it safer to mount under there? I mean there's just a bit less pressure with the additional loss in height, now with the IHS taken off the processor?

Here's the finished product, the core is jet black, and they say this is the best color. The reflection you see is my surfboard like ten feet away, that's how mirror image it is.

just add a couple washers to increase the spring rate to make up for the loss of cpu height.

the heatspreader tends to come off automaticallyfor me if I pull off the R404A prom's cooling head without letting it warm up first :p

I've removed some more by just using a thin knife (but make sure you hold it perfectly horizontal as to not to damage any traces), takes less than a minute to pop it off

On my prommie, I had to cut the four legs of the top base of the prom kit, thus lowering it by 0.1-0.2mm which is all that is needed.

the Northwood core is pretty large with its 512Kb L2 cache, its probably way easier to mount the vapo on it than on a tiny athlon xp without crushing it.

So do you think the pressure from a SLK-947 will crush it/ Oh now I know what Dissolved was saying. At first i didn't understand. Becuase adding washers to the SLK stand-offs would simply simply create more pressure by cirtue of th screws not being able to "tap out" at the bootom. So the washers would allow for more pressure, and IO guess more washrs mor pressure to an extent.

But what I'm concerned for the pressure, perhaps the with the IHS removed, the additional space may be healthier for the CPU? Any idea's guys, because this is my favorate Overclocker, even though both my Malway 2.4C's will reach 3.6GHz (33FSB) at deafult, I trhink the system "seemed" more stable with this one. I actually beleive they both have a lot mor to go. Anyone know what' up with the 848 chipset for 800FSB, and Prsecott?

You're dealing with about .056" of an inch difference in height where the IHS touched the core. 1/16" is .062". I just did 2, but both chips required lapping to get flat. Get a fresh razor blade, and place it across the core, now hold it up to the light, you'll see the light through the low spots. Both of mine were high in the middle, Majors were low in the middle. With the IHS on, the chip only sees a certain amount of clamping pressure before the edges of the IHS bottom out over the pins/socket and take the excess load. Without the IHS, all the excess load goes right to the core, so be careful. I use a WB, with a mounting kit pirated form an Alpha 8942, which is spring loaded, and I just tightened it 1/2 turn at a time. Idle temps improved 4c, load temps 5c.
