Next week we'll see a new thread..."RIP E8400"
Yeah man, Awsome Shiznat!
Nah, 4.5ghz on a Wolfdale with air is nuffen muffen!
Next week we'll see a new thread..."RIP E8400"
I think it's an interesting thread, you get to hear different sides of the voltage and longevity issues, with a little flavor added in, hold on while i get my popcorn

HEAT
*** Being kind is sometimes better then being right.
That's an AMD CPU, you can't compare the two.
AMD CPU's die super easily and have no tolerance to heat, where as intel, well..the prescotts or "preshotts' could run at 80C without dieing, my cedar mill ran in the 70's without dieing, my e6300 ran in the 70's without dieing etc. etc. etc.
Anyways, like I said, time will tell. I've had many cpu's that would heat up like crazy and they're still working years later.
I'm not saying heat is a good thing, like i said, my current CPU does not hit anywhere near 70 unless i do prime and ONLY prime.

Nice man, just to let you know I have the same board as your old one and I get 505fsb stable at 1.52 volts in cpuz. Also at 4.0 it only takes me 1.28 volts.

BTW, 45nm != 65nm. Stop feeding it volts that it doesn't need or it'll be the last time you get to 4GHz. Intel overclocking needs to be harder so the nubs don't think they can pull it off easy and then fry their chips... or maybe not... entertaining to hear "oh noes wtf it was 4.5GHz stable but it can't do 4 now"
EDIT: LAG, delete first post plz.

Reason why the graph is so skewed.. 1.61v for 4.5GHz is garbage. My E8400 did 4GHz with 1.3825v, 4.5Ghz with 1.45v, 4.7GHz with 1.47v and walled at 540FSB. I have seen many E8400's doing 4.5GHz with sub 1.5v. Blasting 1.6v through that chip is a sure-fire way to kill it. If you ask for screenies or declare my thoughts as fake, I bought the chip on a whim, benched it once, put it in a drawer, and subsequently sold it, so take my words on faith. 1.6v will kill your chip.
edit: ps.. I had a "mediocre" E8400 compared to alot of other samples just to put it in perspective.
Due to increasing spring temps, I've decided to clock down...until my 12,000 BTU air conditioner arrives ^.^
Currently at 4.31ghz 1.47v
I had a wierd OC'ing experience though...For some wierd reason, my frames dropped in the 30-50 zone no matter what clock I hit.
If i went back to defeault, frames would go back to normal but once i starting oc'ing again, the frames would stay in the 30-50 zone.
cpu was not overheating, didn't go past 1.51v in bios.
All CPU features disabled in bios, smart fan all that stuff.
Anyone had a simular experience?

Fixed
It would help if you told us what game this occured in. Normally the CPU has very little to do with overall frame rates in a single card application. Especially one that only went down a couple hundred Mhz.I had a wierd OC'ing experience though...For some wierd reason, my frames dropped in the 30-50 zone no matter what clock I hit.

Hey all,
I don't mean to bring back a dead thread but I just wanted to share my conclusion with the e8400 many years later, since the theory was that it would die due to high voltage.
The cpu stayed strong at 4ghz 1.62 volts up until last week when i replaced it with a q9550 e0. No errors, no issues..it just does no justice in BF3 even with a modded config and forced rendering DX10.
I kept the temps stable with a corsair h50.
