Exclamation Chipset X38/48 Issue with CRUCIAL Ballistix. Their statement.....

This is some of my newest chat with the CRUCIAL On-line guys.

Hello, my name is Eric . How may I help you?

    mauricio hermes: hello

    Eric : Hi Mauricio

mauricio hermes: can you check this? some friend told me that INTEL X38/48 does not support well the BALLISTIX pc8500?

Eric : sure. Let me check.

mauricio hermes: this is his statement
    mauricio hermes: http://www.blazingpc.com/forum/showp...61&postcount=1

Eric : Yes. We have invalidated the Ballistix on this board.

mauricio hermes: maximus formula too? tht's horrible!
mauricio hermes: the intel X38/48 is "killing" the DIMM?
mauricio hermes: I'm going to work, tanks for your time

Eric : The Ballistix are very finicky modules. The *NEED* steady voltage at 2.2v

    mauricio hermes: understood "

    really final, their statement.

can someone here run Ballistix properly, for a long time????

I'm running them at 1093, timing 5-4-4-9 v2.27 in everest, in bios set to exactly v2.20. If I set lower than v2.20 cause hang DET DRAM.

So far it still running good memtest86 no error, has been running them for about 2 months, my is no LED version.

    probably some VDIMM under/over voltage.
Is there a MOD to that?

Plenty of Maximus Formula users have reported in both MF threads that they get anything upto +0.1v overvolt compared to BIOS setting. As long as users know what offset their own board gives then setting vdimm and knowing what it gives shouldn't be a problem.

As for how steady the given voltage is... my board gives the vdimm an extra 0.01v on load compared to idle.

The LED version runs much hotter, and... still requires 2.20V to stay stable. I couldn't stand the heat so I replaced them with some Kingston HyperX sticks instead. This is on a G35 board, and apparently, below 2.20V, nothing above 800MHz would be stable. At exactly 2.20V, the sticks can go as high as 1140MHz, though.

    4* Ballistix PC2-6400 1GB DIMMs ( 4GB Total ) at DDR2-1200 at 2.14V
    and another set ( 4* Ballistix PC2-6400 1GB DIMMs ) at DDR2-1200 at 2.09V

On two different Asus Maximus Formula ( X38 ).

Both systems running fine for ~5 weeks now

most x38/48 boards have no 2.20 but 2.17 and 2.22, but if it says 2.2 then it should cover any voltage up to 2.24 +-5%, 2.20 would be different but ive only seen 2digits on ram voltage

I'm running mine @1133 5-5-5-15 for over a month now. Had them @ 5-4-4-9 for a week for benchies. Double sided versions and I'm @ 2.19v Everest read. Bios says 2.12v. I'm going to try lowering vdimm to see if they'll run at lower voltage. These double sided versions are the most stable Crucial ram I've had.

Interesting... is this unique to the Asus boards, or ANY board based on the X38/48 chipset? I'm planning to get a DFI X48 board in the near future and I'd like to use Crucial Ballistix 8500 but not if they'll burn out.

unless u already have some balistex double sidded why bother since the single sided is trash, if want a 100% chance to get gmh then get the stuff from tank guys made by team group
    http://www.tankguys.com/product_info...oducts_id=1806

its cheaper and has an 8 layer pcb instead of a 6 layer so it should clock better

Dfi boards love Ballistix, I own 8 sets myself. x-38 board runs my PC6400 sticks @ DDR2-1000 @ 4-4-4-5-4-28 performance level 6 with only 2.05 in bios.

I think all of the issue's are going to be with the latest single sided revision. Having said that, mine are double sided and are dying, but I don't think it the boards fault. DFI X38

Is it possible that my new system won't boot because of this?

Just installed all components and my LCD poster shows: DET DRAM

All LED's are green (even RAM)

    Any suggestions?

    I've got ballistix 1066mhz
    but is the one-sided DIMMs.

    crap!

but the maximus do HAVE the suggesteed voltage setting for it. (2.20)
    some X38 motherboards do not.

I think my maximus can handle that memmo's
    let's give it a try
