    fx5500 gpu cooler

This is my ghetto mod, fan died needed to keep the low profile for other pci cards. so I used plastic steel puddy to rig up my own low profile cooler. an old bus heatsink and a fan from a dead laptop. works better then stock. no temps on an fx5500 but to the touch, big difference. 350/500 nibitor bios as well.

    Still here

Hey, Life got in the way of living. I have been away for a while.

I checked out this topic again from start to the end. Thanks all you ghetto modders for making me giggle smile and swoon. Amazing and epic topic this is.

btw that Athlon system I posted on page 3 of this thread:http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...2&postcount=62 is still running, though it has been rebooted because I upgraded the storage at one point and the PSU failed and needed replacing. The pencil mod on the CPU is still good too.

I did this a few days ago when I wanted toi use my stock GTX 260 heatsink and a swiftech universal GPU waterblock

I had to remove the newly cut fins one at a time as not to ben the rest of them. Needless to say it was tedious as hell.

I also had to cut two holes for the tubing to pass through.

Not my best work. I should have used a sanding bit. Not too shabby I don't think but I know I could have done better.

I did even them out a bit but my camera battery died so i have no final product pics yet, sorry.

Another mistake I made was cutting the last heatpipe thinking I was going to remove it as well.

I am going to try and solder a new piece of copper tubing there and patch it as I think it will help a little bit in the long run.

Here is what it looks like with the Swiftech

this corner gave me the most trouble

I have since cleaned up the cuts there and on the side of the fins using a dremmel cutting wheel and "shaving" each fin on both sides to get it to look original.

    Another "fitting" pic

So i assembled the pieces to see what it is going to look like somewhat.

    Looks like its fitting nicely.

Snap the top on and here's what we have now

I've been waiting for years to hear something along the lines of "last night my monitor fell off the ceiling and cracked me in the head." - I'm still waiting.

My most recent ghetto mod is a uni-sink hacked up to fit under an HR-03 with a ghetto retention bracket. Yes the dust did get cleaned off of the HR-03.

So I decided to start a project,
I called it Project Cool n' Quiter.
I have a Delta PFB1212UHE-F00, 252CFM 67dBa fan. Ofr the past few months I've been using it at 5v, but the motor on the fan doesnt like 5v. Its been barely spinning, like 1200 RPM (mind you at 12v it spins at 5500RPM). So I feel like its been wasted. I also have at Delta AFB1212SHE, a 152 CFM, 53 dBA fan. At 5v this fan runs at 1300 RPM, and moves plenty of air while remaining quiet enough.
So using a normal switch, handybox, some speaker wire, ductape, electrical tape, and a few other cheap items I made a nice switch for the monster fan for OC runs.
I stuck two aluminum nails into a molex, one in 12v and one in ground. Taped it up real nice so they didn't touch. I then took some 16-gauge speaker wire and wired it from the molex nails into the handy-box via PCI-slot. I spliced the fan and speaker wires grounds together with a wirenut, and put the hots on the light switch.

I put the AFB on top of my Xiggy (ductape) pulling air 24/7 while the PFB remains off. I also put some sound deadening material to make it a little quieter, but that was a waste of time.

Next goal is to buy Megahelms, and another AFB.

    Some pics:
Pics are huge, just click link.

I have done some mods to my Cisco PIX 506e firewall I picked up for free from my old employer.

First I upgraded the RAM for 32mb of PC-100 SDRAM to 256mb of PC-100 SDRAM. I then went ahead and upgraded the CPU from a 300mhz Celeron to a PIII 600mhz. Too bad I can't adjust multiplier.

The thing only had one 50mm fan cooling the tiny heat sink. The thing was hot and loud. I cut a hole in the top and put in a 120mm fan ontop of it. Thing now runs cool and quiet. It is no longer hot to the touch.

The stock AMD heatsink only allows 60mm fan to be mounted, but I want to use a 80mm fan. So, I used Zip Ties to mount the 80mm fan on the stock heatsink.

This is currently how i cool my xbox 360 (not joke), the stock fans stopped working. Xbox currently has no fans plugged in at all, just this big window fan blowing on it, it works better than the origonal fan ever did!

    Q9300 [Crunch] / XFX GTX285 [Fold] / EVGA 750i
    Two 250GB 7200 / 4GB XMS2 800 / 1Kw XPS PSU / Freezer Pro 7
    10,797 3DMark Vantage / Scythe 120mm Case fans / Vista U. 64
    PS3 - 700 Work Units and going strong!, XPS 720 H2C Case
Crunching 24/7 on Q9300....might upgrade to an i7

Have a look at my 4850... It actually works pretty well, the VRMs are surely quite comfortable with all that cooling, and the're happily giving the GPU 1.35v which are good for 800/1150. With 1.38v it goes up to 830/1150 stable.. Enjoy! Card was bought nearly a month after it got released.. Still going strong with those volts.

Temps during summer with the fan at 12v:
    Idle: 38-40°
    Load: 55-60°

    During winter, 12v:
    Idle: 28-30°
    Load: 48-52° IIRC

Furmark usually loads at about 5° higher.. Ghetto, but I found a good use for the stock C2D fan with copper core, a NB HS from a pentium II board and an old K6-2 HS XD

My wireless G USB dongle. Came from my P5K-E wifi edition. Overvolted from 3.3V to 5V, with an additional heatsink with MX-2 thermal compound
