Mtron SSD MOBI vs Raptor 10K vs SAS 15K (RAID 0 ) FIGHT!

    Hi XSers,

Would like to share the test with my new SSD and few questions!

    SYSTEM:
    E6850
    Asus Maximus Formula SE
    4G DDR21066
    9800GX2
    Win Vista 32

RAID Controller: Adaptec SAS 3805 Raid Card

    1) SAS 15K x 2 (RAID 0)
    2) Raptor 10K x 2 (RAID 0)
    3) Mtron SSD MOBI x 2 (RAID 0)

Can anyone please tell me why can't i get the constant line and the 0.1 ms access as advertised ??

The .1ms access is altered by the RAID. RAID adds overhead that slightly impacts that access.

I wouldn't read much into the lack of a constant line.

But according to http://www.dvnation.com/benchmark-22.html all of their raid or non raid all achieved the .1ms random access.

there are 2 mtron ssd disk the mobi and the pro.
mtron says that the pro version has better raid capability's
but the pro cost twice of the mobi version

    To be a professional noob/idiot
    * Default factory speed is for noobs.
    * Everything must go above the speed that the factory consider safe.
    * Everything for more performance
    * Everything fits, and everything can be broken.
    * Most problems can be fixed by adding a volt or two.
    * Post things in your signature that makes no sense at all.

If you do a search, MOBI is not supposed to work very well in RAID array

They don't get a "straight line" with it either in a RAID array

The difference in access times might be due to the differences in the controller. What happens when you use the same software (HDTune vs. HDTach)?

HD tach 3.0 still no support on Vista.

EDIT: NM, just figured out the XP comptable mode for HD tach. The result were identical.

That should be almost a flat line reading and definately be reading 0.1ms.
Take one of the mtrons out and attach to your ICH9R controller.Run hdtach/tune and that should verify if its the controller or the mtron.

Ok I just recieved my MTRON 32GB PRO SSD.
It will be installed into a new machine that is a QX9650, EVGA 790i Ultra SLI and Vista 64.

So something I am unclear about at the moment for performance is running it as a...

Single drive with OS installed and booting from that.
Raid 0 with 1 drive with OS installed and booting from that.

I have read so much on these in the last few days I have forgotten where I read it, but it was something along the lines of getting better performance from these if used with a Raid 0 and only one drive. It was something about the Raid software that increased write speeds.

Raid 0 is only possible with two or more drives.
For optimal performance on these you wanna be looking at a raid controller card something on the lines of an Areca controller.

Great that helpped a lot. That raid 0 and one drive was confusing me as I thought you needed 2 drives also.

So 1 areca ARC-1231ML-KIT PCI-Express x8 SATA II Controller Card it is.

What I am going to do it setup the rig with the one SSD and see how it performs. Then if it needs it I will add the Raid card, I assume that you can not run the Raid card with just one drive ? If not I will need another SSD.

I am not sure if you could run one disk off the Areca but with the price of it you could almost add another 2 16GB pro mtrons and run it off your mobo controller if its compatible.

There were issues earlier with the ICH9R limiting the Mtrons but as far as I know they have been resolved. The bandwidth was capped

the 680i and newer chipsets are all fine.

Which are the prices in the US for the M-TRON SSDs?

I remember when I contacted them 1 year and half ago they had a single line (sata or ide) and they quoted me 1500$ for 32mb drive (performance wise it was on the high side, with 100mb read and 80mb write - equal to the pro?).

I think the sweet spot is with 3/4 units in raid0, with the fastest Areca controller, of course

    I found one retailer:

    There's better prices around?
