    Extending wires on fans...?

    Hello All,

Quick question, I want to extend the wires on my yate loon fan to better reach my fan controller. I am going to be slicing/soldering 22 gauge wire to make them longer. Is there anything that I need to be aware of before I undertake this seemingly simple task?

    Thanks for your help.

I do it all the time, in fact I often rip fans out of dead psu's and use them and a lot of those have no plugs on them.

Cool, I am going to make the fan cables the exact length that I need. I am getting a MM UFO case so I want to try and hide the fan cables as best as possible.

hey jsunn i was just wondering what color wire are you going to use....can any type of wire be used to extend the fan cables??.....when you say extend them you mean splice and connect or are you making a whole new wire (hence the soldering)....sorry for all the questions this stuff is rather new to me

I am just using 22 gauge bloack colord wire. It is stranded, not solid. I am going to be cutting them and inserting a length of 22 gauge wire to make them the length that I need.

I will post some pics when order my case (hopefully this weekend)

Just be sure to isolate the cables with isolating band so they don't make any contact with the case or any other metal parts in the case to avoid short circuit

Electrical tape is what I use when I extend fan leads. Works fine for me every time.

I'll be using heat shrink. I will also be sleeving all of the wires also.

I use heat shrink and then sleeving over that. I agree it makes a much cleaner looking case.

If you want to match the colors, here is a place that sell all the colors in 25" rolls.

Frozencpu also sells it by the foot.

Snip, solder, heatshrink, done. It really is that simple I wired up the 3 fans for my Radiator that way, and I'm going to be re-doing all the other fans in my case using the same method.

No need for that. Just re-solder on one of the many spare 3-pin plugs you'll now have lying around Sure, it's a very DIY-handyman approach, but it's just a fan, so the slight extra resistance won't matter.
