Nehalem releasing in Q3?

Intel Corp., the world’s largest maker of microprocessors, may bring the introduction of its microprocessors based on the next-generation micro-architecture code-named Nehalem forward. The decision will add pressure on Advanced Micro Devices in the market of dual-processor servers.

According to diagrams that represent slides from Intel Corp.’s transition guidance documents published by VR-Zone web-site, the fist Intel’s code-named Bloomfield central processing units (CPUs) for 2-way servers are set to be shipped in Q3 2008. The initial quantities will be very low, however, already in Q4 the share of Nehalem micro-architecture-based 2P server chips will increase to about 8%.

The dangerous part is their Atom platform; it would be such a killer for HTPC/mobile PC/iPhone like devices.

if a company sticks to there innovation cycle (intel) people complain, if they milk the consumer only with refresehs, they complain to (nvidia)...

I just think they learnt their lesson and don't want AMD to pull another "A64" era and just doing whatever they can to give AMD as hard times as possible. At least everything I've seen since Core 2 Duo launch has spoken for that. The giant isn't sleeping anymore. Aggressive and updated developing strategy/plans (Every 2nd year new arch followed by dieshrink of same tech following year), aggressive release dates, less money spent on marketing and more on development is the perfect recipe to let AMD remain weak. I wish NVIDIA copied some of this strategy. (well at the same time I don't as I want to always have 2 very balanced competitors but at same time I also wanna see new products out fast).

Guys, you have to realize that modern CPUs are not nearly as powerful as they are
needed be. You think those CPUs are made for gaming in the first place , but they are not.
This is and should normally be the main motivation for constant improvement.

The slides shown are production charts and not shipping charts. There usually goes around 3 months between production start and the first shipped.

Intel was thoroughly embarrassed with K8, K6 and K7 were competitive, but the performance crown flipped back and for over the years during those two architectures.... however, K8 established a decisive and lasting performance lead for 3 years ... it would appear Intel is not willing to go back to that period again.

I knew this. I just wanted to read how others feel about this. But don't forget if it wasn't for AMD's A64 we wouldn't be where we are today. Intel knows this, and I'm sure they have no plans on giving them another chance to be sucessefull anytime soon which I believe is wrong in a way. AMD and its supporters know they could never be better then Intel so why not let them win a few crowns here and there. Make everyone happy lol

But who knows what AMD is hiding under their sleeves. I know its going to take more then just a CPU as we know of today to beat intel. I can see AMD introducing a new cpu with embedded gpu instructions for crunching.

Well, Nvidia likes their orange juice without any pulp. Look at the 9800gtx , I own a 8800gtx and to me that is an insult of a product. They could've just named it 8800GTZ " Z " meaning the final product line of the architecture.

Intel doesn't play around, but unless they want to risk a monopoly, they will only launch a high end server part or two, possibly a desktop high end part, look at yorkfield's launch, its been months since the qx9650 launched and still no largely available yorkfields. Either way, if anything, it'll just be the official launch of the family and then just a part or two to get the channel going, it will take quite a while for them to fully ramp the family, 45nm production hasn't quite reached where 65nm is

I cant wait to see how these chips perform and overclock. My AM2 rig is serving me very well for the time being, but the upgrade bug is starting to get to me.

Its either shanghai or nehalem for me come tax time, and Im leaning more towards nehalem since FSB wont be holding me back. Lazy overclockers like me hate FSB, Im too impatient to tweak latency.
