    Crucial Ballistix: best batch?

    I've bought some kits of Crucial Ballistix DIMM Kit 2x 1 GB PC2-6400U (BL2KIT12864AA804) @ different locations and received 16FD3 + 16FD5.

The 16FD3 is second hand, has the old heatspreader with clips and is double sided. (CL1117V.87 - 72596)

The 16FD5 is brand new, has a new heatspreader without clips and as far as I can see without opening the box also double sided. (CL1118F.3F - 97532)

I'm still expecting 1 kit but it should also be 16FD5 as of what I've heard from other recent buyers from that shop.

I'm planning to keep only 1 kit (the best 1 ) and sell the others.

Is 1 batch superior to the other? Or are the results pretty equal?
Should I test the new kit (loses value when opened) to be sure?

From my experience best kit for one motherboard might not be best for another motherboard hence I keep a few kits around and see which is best for the motherboard I'm working with

I'm doing it like eva2000 and zsamz_, I won't part with any of my kits... *evillaugh*

    Just keep all of them!

Well, I think there are differences even in the same batch, so I would test all of them. My bet is on the newer ones though, maybe you can post some of your results, I would appreciate that very much!

On my X38 motherboard, the 16FD5 batch seems to perform extremely well CAS4 and CAS5 is cake walk for DDR1200

I had 16FD3 and they were good to 1175 5-5-5-15 2.2 and up to 970 4-4-4-8 2.35, but the voltage killed one of the sticks within a few months. I was running them 24/7 900 4-4-4-8 2.3v

stephen23: what voltage is that? i can't read it...

    I have some 16FD5, and it does alright. DDR2-1300 at 2.3v, 5-5-5-15.

The Ballistix Lanfest is 16FD0? and it clocks about the same.

I have 2 sets of Balistix DDR2-1066. 1 set is 16FD3 the second is 16FD5. They both run great 1 set at a time. When I try to run all 4 sticks seems like all hell breaks loose. They just dont play well together I guess.

    They both run fine @ 5-4-4-8 @ 2.2v.

Has anyone else had problems running these 2 batchs/revisions together?

    Thanks

Wow and this is my first post!!!

It seems that Crucial are in a spot of bother atm.

I really hoped that they could continue their previous double sided chips and ditch the new single sided ones on their 2x1 Gb kits, and I was also expecting great results from their 2x2 Gb sets.

Oh well, never had cruacial Ram myself anyway.

this is an outrage. I am an unfortunate victim of the 8FE5's and they can't clock to anything past 1100mhz.

Every review out there claims these sticks can hit 1200mhz without a sweat, yet not ONE review stated the difference between the 8FE5's and the 16's.

It's a good thing i got these at a retailer with good return policy, because these are going right back to the store tomorrow.

What a total letdown. I almost feel like I have to retreat back to OCZ to get something worth out of my rampage

i have a maximus x38. i have had nothing but trouble out of crucial ram. i originally bought the special edition lanfest when neweeg had them. on my p35 board they were good ram 1100+mhz, but on my x38 i couldnt even get them to 1066 stable. eventually the got to where they wouldnt post at anything less than 2.3 volts.

sent the lanfest in for rma, and crucial sent back single sided tracers that are complete junk. if i try them in my maximus at default after clearing my cmos i get detdram hang. they take 2.2 volts just to run 5-5-5-15 at 800mhz.

if i put the single sided tracers in my p35 i can get 1050mhz. i think i'm going to rma these back again.

on a side note, i bought one of the last sets of transcend axeram 1200mhz and they freaking rule. granted they dont overclock alot, but easy 1240mhz at 2.25volts. running this ram is like a whole new rig. before the bios settings were very touchy. 1 wrong setting and it would either hang at detdram, or nuke my boot sector and require a fresh windows install. since getting these axe's i've had 0 problems with this rig.

Maximus really doesn't get along with Crucials, in fact...it doesn't get along with DDR2 generally speaking. It is not the rams fault, the chipset (X38) is more likely to run properly with DDR3 that DDR2.

sounds more like bios needs optimising for crucials more likely ?
