I think I'm going to switch to Vista64 , I find a way to crash it, install msn 7 and do an upgrade to windows live = crash

For 3 months {since RC1} I'm using 2008 Server x64 as my 24/7 OS [with uptimes from couple of days to two weeks , of course "user-dependent" not like Vista which is almost "forcing" reboots due to "prefetching" {argh...}], much better than Vista IMHO. Aero, DX10, no prefetching, no problems .

So, anyone managed to run [bench] PCMark Vantage on 2008 yet? I believe this is same "protection against Server OS'es" like in 3DMark Vantage will be.
On "stock" 2008 it installs and then it wants... "Vista"

Now if only there was an iso on the net that's not ultra cleverly named, is >1mb and has a seed/leech of more then 1:10000, i'll happily try it out.
I used to be a schizophrenic; but we're okay now.

Why would you want an ISO from the net when you can get the ISO direct from Microsoft? It took me less than 30 minutes to download it.

Simply extract, and then run vlite. My install went from 3.5gb to 1.8gb easy.

Haha, funnily enough Pidgin was what I was really after but couldn't remember the name and Trillian was a lot quiicker given my memory of it!

I use miranda for the moment.

My conclusion for server 2008 :

I think this os is really for gaming and work, great stability, memory usage lower than vista, really responding and quick, fully parametrable , and most important for me: not this f*cking UAC, you can change any file without any advertisement.

Drivers of vista are fully compatible.

But for me there is a but , this os is not for all usage I mean my version (x64) as trouble with a lot of program because they refuse to install in os server. it's not a polyvalent os, this is for benching, gaming, working (for me means graphism, video editing, web design,)

So for my use i'll switch to Vista64 with tweaking.

surely if you can turn server 2008 into workstation 2008 you know how to turn pre-fetch off in vista?

Until a couple of months ago I had a really old copy of QBTimer for inputting my hours at work (we use QuickBooks to track employee hours). This copy of QBTimer was so old that it would insta-crash on any dual monitor machine, and all I had were dual monitor workstations.

To make my long story short I had to install XP in M$'s virtual PC just to run QBTimer and so I could get my time in and get paid - good times, good times.

Can i be sure that server 2008 is really an "specialized version" of vista ? I'd like further confirmation. Thanks.

It is the same build number as Vista SP1 (6001). It just basically has all of the slow part of the kernel removed yielding improved performance.

Nice.... So vliteing them would probably result in the same thing.

Except that it still performs worse than XP/2003.

I ran benchmarks on Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit vLited to 1gb (literally nothing remained, look at the first 3 screen shots under the Server 2008 section) and my every day Windows XP.

    System is in my signature.
Video card drivers used: 174.74 non-WHQL

    Code:
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 32-bit (Western Digital Raptor 150GB non-AHCI)

3DMark06 Standard Benchmark with October 2007 Hot fix: 10534 3DMarks
    Code:
Windows Server 2008 Standard Service Pack 1 64-bit (Western Digital SE16 Caviar 250GB AHCI)

    3DMark06 with October 2007 Hot fix: 9983
    EDIT:
Added Windows XP "services.msc" window along with "Performance Options".
Time to go do the same on Workstation.

Great site with many ways to turn off server functionality and bump up the workstation functionality.

Finally some real numbers... Thats hardly any hit, just ~600 points. Could you bench them again, except with a normal install of Server 2008, configured as a workstation (don't modify with vlite)?

Oh and quick question. All you guys that do modify with vlite, and more than chop the size in half, what is it exactly that you are removing? Like how do you know what is OK to remove, and won't cause problems with other aplications that depend on what was removed, etc...?
