FreeBSD 7.0 trumps linux kernel performance

the new "Completely Fair Scheduler" and other kernel improvements like the SMPng initiative have brought the newest incarnation of the BSD kernel into software performance heaven. it seems that even with improvements in the latest linux kernel, the BSD kernel still operates roughly 15% faster than an equivalently equipped and compiled linux machine.

what do you guys think? BSD was originally my favorite distro until i realised it was going nowhere after 4.4 but now things are shaping up like a Hawaiian Tropic calendar model and i'm all about hawaiian babes.

I say, FOR THE BSD! Even i never tryed it but if it have 15% better berformance i rather take it than any other distro.

I'm thinking about replacing my Gentoo fileserver with FreeBSD 7. I'm just WAY too lazy to do it.

freebsd was my first distro. i first used 4.4 back in '98. i'm very eager to try the new version

Yeah, I tried 4.7 back in '00 or '01 I believe it was, but when I tried to upgrade the box I blew it up and just never re-installed it.

Its about time they got it sorted. SMP support has been in such a mess since 5.*

I'll have to check it out...I always enjoy reading about new Unix-based operating systems. The versatility gives me a nice, warm feeling.

I'd love to be using FreeBSD - grudgingly on Linux because nVidia refuse to write 64-bit FreeBSD drivers. Nexenta (OpenSolaris kernel with Ubuntu userland) is looking nice though (even though I do hate Ubuntu) - might dual-boot with Bluewhite64 Linux once I get my new RAID array up...
