    4790K & 4690K "Devil's Canyon" Overclocking Thread

Hey guys, been a very long time since I had some new gear to play with. 4790K is on preorder, hoping to get it soon! But we really need a thread on the lovely XS that I've been a member on for over a decade now. Seems like just yesterday I signed up!

I actually have a 4770k right now, but it's a bad clocker so hoping the 4790K will make me excited to OC again!

Anyways, lets have a nice OC discussion on the retail chips as they start rolling into XS users rigs!

Comments, advice, concerns, hints. Let's see what we can do with the "Canyon".

System specs will be as follows....

Asus Maximus Hero VI Z87 (bios updated for Devils Canyon)
    16Gb Kingston Beast 2400Mhz RAM
Custom watercooling with Apogee HD waterblock
    Corsair HX850 PSU
    2x Gigabyte GTX 670 SLI

and of course a 4790K that I will not be a afraid to pump volts through, I have plenty of backup rigs if I blow this up!

If you guys are running a 4770K and want to upgrade, I say sell it now on ebay! Mine sold for $270 so the upgrade to a 4790K is $69 in my case.

Thank you for the pic. Kind of hard to tell if the TIM is any better.

Anyone in XS get a 4790K yet? I'm still waiting on TigerDirect. I'm following overclock.net's thread, but much prefer Xtremesystems standards of overclocking!

Picked up a retail 4790K yesterday, seems to be bunny extraction. Not stable at 4.6GHz even with 1.3v. And the batch number is odd, L331C501. I'd have thought all Devil's Canyon chips would have a batch indicating 2014 manufacture.

More than not 24/7 stable but at least it runs for me to see what core voltage it needs for 4.5 which is where I would run it 24/7. Boots at 1.1v but have had it hang post a few times so bumped to 1.15 & it’s been fine just messing about in windows & very light benches. Don’t know what the cache voltage is as its on auto atm & still on the box cooler!

I will pop this in my Asrock z87 OCF sometime & see if it can make 5G 1:1 at reasonable voltages

Had a play in the Z87 OCF & not impressed... sure its ok but I got a better 4770K so will find a home for this one & keep looking.

Core is ok 1.35v, IMC V Good stock v, Cache 1.375 poor/average compared to 4770K's.

VDIMM 1.65, IOA & IOD auto.
