I haven't bought anything but GSkill until now. From PC4400 LE 0437's, some 1066HK's, and this latest 4GB DDR2-1066PK Kit. I read some posts/threads on Geils forums and they seem to have some pretty good customer service and support. Not that GSkill has bad service or support, but lately their DDR2 products offerings, although affordable, haven't been up to speed. No pun intended.

With this kit, that uses the same chips of the PC8000 kit, you can use 5-5-3-15 with no problems at all. In fact, I can't boot with mine over 1020 With 5-5-4-15, but with 5-5-3-15 they overclock all the way to 1100Mhz

BTW I'm waiting for stock to get a pair of 8500 to test

Strange because 5-5-4-15 is loose compare to 5-5-3-15.

Yeah, but that's how it is. With a friend's 1066 kit I've observed the same behaviour, 1100 5-5-3-15 with no problems at all.

On his Maximus we used the following settings for a quick stability test (1h of Orthos blend priority 5): all timmings on AUTO, only 5-5-3-15 entered manually. 333 strap, 5:6 divider with 460FSB resulting in ~1104Mhz. BIOS 907 if I can remember correctly. Voltage set to 2.0v in BIOS, around 2.05v in Windows. With those settings the kit passes at least 1h, and they can do it with less voltage, I'm sure. That was just a quick test.

Anyway in a few days I'll have my own kit, will post results

I'm was trying out the G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK on a DFI X38 LT at stock settings when my DFI P35 LT board came in.

In moving them to the DFI P35 LT, I started to get a small amount of errors with memtest v2.01 at stock settings. In moving them to other slots I noticed that the heatspreader on one dimm is somewhat loose (and no, it wasn't me trying to take a peak ).

I usually press down on the edges when installing and noticed that one side gave.

There is only some slight tension on that end of the dimm. It's making contact with the TIM (a white tape that runs along the spreader) but not enough pressure to keep the spreader from moving if touched.

I really hate to have to RMA these already.

Here's a snapshot. It seems G.Skill (as does Geil) doesn't like to advertise what chips they are using.

we don't recommend it to run on DFi X38 and P35 for now. it has problem.

These modules use different IC's then the 8000 sticks? The PC2 8000 sets have no issues with the DFI P35/X38 boards.

    Strange, I didn't have any errors on the X38 with Memtest+ v2.01.

Memtest+ v2.00 had problems on P35/X38 boards (which I didn't know and was driving me nuts). You would get about 20 or so errors after the first pass with 4GB of memory (and assume above).

I was getting that with an OCZ kit as well.

They released Memtest+ v2.01 on Feb 21 and it addresses the problems:
    # Solved a major bug in Memory Address Errors Reporting
    # Corrected Intel 3-Series (P35/X38) chipset init
Being bitten once, I'm not convinced that there still isn't a bug when I ran it on the P35 overnight. I was picking up a very small amount of errors (about 1 every 8 passes).

I was going to revert to Memtest+ 1.70 when I noticed the heat spreader issue. Turns out the second dimm has the issue as well.

    @G.S Technician

Are these heat spreaders safe to use?

Is it "normal" that they could slide with a bit of pressure?

Or did these puppies get to hot and caused the issue?

It's not like they are falling off and does take some pressure to move them.

It does look like they are making contact.

Guess I'm trying to get out of RMA'ing them which I know is the right thing to do.

But these are powerchips also, so no different ICs than PC8000 only high-binned.

Those who have problems, try to set tRFC to higher values.

PC8000 has 52 by SPD and this is not enough in some cases. Probably PC8500 has the same problem.

The heatspreaders on all of my G skill modules have been fine untill now.

When installing any ram module, you are supposed to apply equal pressure along the whole module, not press one side at a time. You are just asking your modules to break if you do that!

Apply pressure with BOTH hands on each end of the modules when installing them. If you are installing modules with no heatspreaders, install it loosely, place a flat edged pencil on top of it and press down both ends.

i've heard that before, however my board refuses to boot with more than 52 on the PC8000. it's a P965 QuadGT btw.

I'm very curious what the problem might be.

I tried these out again on the DFI X38 (BIOS 111) and they are fine at all stock settings. Could only get them to OC to DDR2 1130 stable, but didn't finish trying all possibilities.

I'm moving them back to the DFI P35 LT to check them out again (using memtest+ 1.70 this time).

Edit: And thanks for the PDF. It's not something I've seen other mem companies do to get folks up and running for the first time.
