Fugger - or anyone for that matter - any advice on running E5405s or E5410s on Skulltrail vs other 5400-chipset motherboards?

I thought these mb only come out in 771 sockets, but it looks like they come out in 775 socket too

Well we've had the discussions of all skt771 CPUs working but I was wondering if Skulltrail is worth it for $250-300 CPUs? Is Skulltrail the answer for a good workstation motherboard or do the TYAN and Supermicro 5400 motherboards suffice?
Obviously, I'm not trying to set world record 3dmark scores not with Fugger (and k1ngp1n etc.) in the house! Just for workstations - can I justify the cost of Skulltrail?
Also, I heard the Supermicro motherboards have OC capabilities themselves, just not as nice as Skulltrail. Thoughts?
Well i sent an email to Tyan a few weeks ago in their UK office about 45nm support on the Tempest. No reply.
No, just 771..775 are single socket..771 is dual socket.
If I had a buck for every time I've written that in the last 3 months I could retire to Rio..
That's a tough one to call.
A decent SM 5400 board will run you $500.00 in the US.
So an extra $100.00 for ST with all the options it gives you may actually be a bargain.
I do have questions as to how reliable it will be compared to the SM boards.
As to OC'ing the SM boards you can use systool to bump the memory but thats about it.
There is also a BSEL mod to make the 1333 cpu's run at 1600.
Hope that helps.

Yeah I plan on having at least one 3870 X2 (or 9800 GX2 if I wait long enough).
When you spend more on your motherboard than on your processors and RAM included, something is wrong...
The only way I can justify this is by running VMs and emulating my other two boxes, saving probably $200-300 in the process.

Can someone post some quad channel memory benchmarks please?
thanks, E-

As some review sites have noted these boards are only appealing to a very select segment of use cases. The limited 4 dimm slots kinda erases the purpose of FBDIMMs enabling large memory footprints. Although multiple PCIe slots are offered mose games still can't realize the CPU horsepower that a dual Xeon config offers.
Can get 16gb with 4 dimm's easy enough. Plenty for most uses. IF you want more you dont want this board anyways.
All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.
wow. so in theory once the drivers are released we could see a 6x crossfire setup consisting of single 3870's and 3870x2's with this board? Even If we're limited to 4x crossfire i feel the 30k 3dmark06 could be in trouble. right?
dual socket boards are my true first love!
dual socket A still running!

The entire article continually mentions the downsight of just 4 RAM slots and how all 4 must be filled for the full ~36Gbps bandwidth. It also tacks on a 5-7 ns latency, and so on.
Is that what you're looking for or specifically quad vs dual sticks?
DShankar, yeah I know its possible on the 790fx but like you said Underperforming chips are the only option. I figured with this setup you'd bypass the cpu bottleneck that the AMD setup has.
its pretty bad when my e2180 at 3Ghz CF system is on par with Highend AMD system!
For the money I'd rather have single X quad core, simple motherboard, some Corsair Dominator and 2 of every nvidia card currently made That would give me more hours of fun.
I'm sure the records are going be smashed soon with this MOABoard.
Good luck guys !

where? i cant find ANY fbdimm 800 sticks... there are some 800 555 listed in german shops but not available and at very high prices. i cant find any fbdimm 800 cas4 or even cas3.
thats not the point, fbdimm = server memory which makes it a rather low volume niche product = high price and hard to find. fast low latency fbdimm memory is a niche product of a niche product... itll be expensive and you wont have a wide selection. i dont understand why intel went for fbdimm for skulltrail...
yes i could, anybody could...
thats cool, i never said its a bad board, i just dont see the point...
huh? of course there are...
not 771... how does that make them not competitive?
yeah and i never doubted that... i just dont see the point in spending that much money to break the highscore in 2 or 3 synthetic benchmarks.
i mean in theory you could use a whole server farm to run wprime or the 2k6 cpu test, but whats the point?
take a pic of the cpu test fps bar guys, what did you see... 7? 8fps?
saaya there is always a point, in the searchg for highest banchmark numbers, thats the name of the game
