This isn't exactly custom.... I'm putting together a mini itx box for my new shop and couldn't decide on a cpu cooler for the E8600.
I wanted something better than the stock intel cooler but all the good ones (quiet) seemed a little too expensive for this cheap, recycle build.
I had an unused stock i7 920 heatsink on the shelf, so I removed the fan and mounted it with #8-32 machine screws, and made the wire loop at the top from electric fence wire.
It's kinda ghetto but I think it will work well with a quiet 120mm fan laying on top which will cover the NB heatsink as well.
The two heatsinks touch, but still sit flat and well centered on their chips.
I'll have to wait until tuesday, when the Silverstone SG-05-B arrives to test it.

Instead of using the frankly poor (although i could be incapable of mounting them perfectly) stock AC VRM's sinks, i took the stock cooler and a Wizzard (dremel) to make the below, possibly could of done a neater job if i didnt do it on my lap one handed.
1st attempt i re-used pads, there wasn't much difference (maybe some new pads would of been better, but i refuse to pay for postage that not much less them the item i want
Before i was getting a average max temp around 112c (all being pretty even) and now its 90c (although VRM1 hits 91, 95, 84 so i'll have a look at them at some point, VRM0 hits 91, 90, 89) at Crysis/Vantage highs.

IMG_1043.JPGIMG_1044.JPG. Some of the lower-end wolfdales don't even need a fan on top them, provided there is some sort of air flow in the case.
I wish I thought of the wire though, my mounting system was much harder to craft and consisted of a ring cut with hold saws. =/

Mounted a Pentium 2 hsf on it,now idles at 50

Long time since the last post in here. Anyways, I've got a question for you guys. I want to put an old NB/SB heatsink on to the chip in my router. I currently hang the router on the wall. What would be the easiest way to attach it? I currently have some artic silver 5, but I'm not sure if that will hold it. Can I mix it with something? Any ideas?

Have you tested your custom heatsink yet? I'm curious if the two opposing fans cause the airflow to be reduced along with the angle of the one fan to the fins. The V-style heatsinks have never worked very well for the fin area they have.
