Custom Heatsink thread

This mod was not for the sake of "hack because I can", but maturely a very much needed doing (and i would take it all the way back to the visiontek company as a real complaint)

I got the AGP version of the ati 2600 pro. The heatsink was "classicly" horrible with a solid metal plate (photo) on the back, and an annoying buzzing little fan that stays wide open. so I checked around the web for popular alternatives


And ended up with the accelero revision 2. I hacked the back plate to match ram heatsinks (bottom and top), and to alleviate what I cannot professionally call a problem with that one metal plate going across 3 different active chips (memory, what I think is called the "pci-e convertor" and the most important, the backside of vpu) Everything became quite fluid and of course faster, and cooler. System temps are as normal as ever. I went with custom studs at 3mm for the 2 little bolts holding the whole thing together. Took some drilling, some bending, and my good 20/10 eyeball to make sure the heatsink was exact on the chip gently...



37c seems to be the constant idle at any room temp.44C fully loaded with a graphics test that strains CPU simultaneously. This system is back to 3 fans and loving it...100fps in HL2 at 1280x960 is enough to drive an epileptic mad. (I really do not to go much farrther than this...)

I modified the mounting mechanism on my thermaltake sonic tower. The mod allows it stay locked in place, preventing it from rotating or moving laterally.

I drilled two holes in the copper base in line with the I-bar, and also in line with the 4 screws already drilled in the base. I drilled two matching holes in the I-bar. This was a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS as the I-bar is made of case hardened steel, and the area I needed to drill was rounded. It took about 40 minutes of drilling to get through the I-bar.

Then, when I attempted to screw the I-bar into the base, the heads of one of the screws popped off! Luckily, enough of the shaft of the screw was sticking up so that the I-bar is still held firmly in place. I put 3 washers in between the other screw and the I-bar because I didn't want to take any chances of it poking through the other side.

Also, I used the backplate from my newly purchased thermalright SI-128 SE. I couldn't use the screws that came with it since the mounting brackets for the thermaltake are also threaded, they didn't play nice together. So I used for #4 grade machine bolts with washers through the backplate, and then put a nut on them over the top. You can't see them in the following pic.

I used the same method to secure the I-bar to the bracket, since the usual way suggested by thermaltake is ineffective. Thermaltake's installation has you put two standard computer case screws through the top of the I-bar into the bracket, but the force from the I-bar is so great that the screws are liable to pop right off. So, I screwed in a #4 machine bolt from below, and screwed a nut in over the top.

Quick and easy mod for eVGA 780i.
Stock NB cooling fan is crap, poor quality and looks dumb.
Evercool 60mm alum case fan, fits perfectly.

Custom Heatsinks for my torrent server HD, some pictures of the cutting process and they fixed...
I ended up cutting one side of the mall heatsinks becaus the first cut I did was way too big... this is going to be upside down on the top of an old 20Kg hp server. thats why i cant have any HS under it.

dunno it felt like 18-19°C.. colder than normal room temp. it idled at 23°C, minimum was 21°C lol. in any case, load temps stay very well below 40°C with low fan speed. fk w/c

I get a 40C to 43C load temp with my 8800GT @ 725/1625/2000.

post some pictures, depending on the case its worth it. Some times these heatsinks are big but with few fins, poor surface contact to the air...

I used a modded Accellero Rev.2 on my 4850 (chopped up pwm&ram sinks to fit) and get load temps at 37C.
I would post a pic, but all the moddedness is hidden under the hs fins =[
