I'm back benching in the shed

Thanks mom you can stop clapping now.

Using a very cheap nvidia 8400GS I have rocketed to the very top of the ORB in the 3dmark03 8400GS class (approved drivers) table

I'm also at the very bottom as there is only me in it And they say you need LN2 nowadays to do anything. That's how to get to the top, picking weak targets and beating them into a BLOODY pulp.

Also I have been playing around with 2001. Check the first page of the 8400GS table to see the results of where I spend hours testing and volt modding a card to do 750+ core stock heatsink only to beat it in 1 hour using a stock card with better memory on these bandwidth limited cards. Yeah go me.

Wow, these beers taste good. If I get drunk enough I might just post up a couple of videos a la CES 2008. Sorry no hot chicks with a microphone unfortunately but hey what the hell.

OK, the 8400GS class is not the hot bed of overclocking action the 8800 or 3870 class is but I am old and feeble and need to get into things slowly.

Apparently nowadays people are using pencils rather than soldering irons Shame on you youngsters, go burn your thumbs and put big melted holes in the carpet like the rest of us .

Here's a photo of the rig

    http://www.zen141854.zen.co.uk/rig.jpg

and heres a 3dmark03 on that stock cooler at 848Mhz

    http://www.zen141854.zen.co.uk/864.jpg

Of course I did all that and then forgot to save it to my memory stick, so after all this time things do not change that much ..doh.

    Back soon.

W00t, the shed is back in business

Have fun Andy, looking forward to see your results with those low-end cards

    To bad it's not XFX.
In Holland we have an overclocking contest with 92 participants using an XFX 8400gs. Only a few people allready recieved there cards, and hitting above 1000mhz corespeed
    Here's an example.
    >i5-3570K
    >Asrock Z77E-ITX Wifi
    >Asus GTX 670 Mini
    >Cooltek Coolcube Black
    >CM Silent Pro M700
    >Crucial M4 128Gb Msata
    >Cooler Master Seidon 120M
Hell yes its a mini-ITX gaming rig!

Rock on buddy, just noticed your 25K score.

Guys in Holland are having a contest with this card and some are feeding the core over 2.0V, reaching over 1000MHz corespeed and over 2600 shaders.

They're just running nature for the competition but if one of these guys will do a complete run they will take over the topspot i'm afraid.

So go and voltmod that puppy Andy!!

Thanks All and especially Zeus who gave me help with my new intel P35 chipset after I tried to apply my past experience of nvidia 680 tight timings on it. Who would have though people use 2T !

Metro, I have not done a volt mod for memory on my first card with that core speed, Rol-co kindly suggested it was likely to be a small 3 leg REG though but before I did that I have bought another card so will b voltmodding that soon.

Thanks for the information on the Holland challenge ownage, I was aware of it from all the people just doing nature on the first page .. weirdo's I thought but it sounds great fun and I believe Rol-co is doing that also.

Zeus, as for 1Ghz on core, that is very good indeed, however they will need to get good memory result as well as these are very bandwidth limited. As mentioned before if 500/550 is faster than 745/460 then I would be competitive with less than 1Ghz on the core if I could hit 800 on this new card. Volt mod this weekend and we shall see. They will probably beat me I agree, unless they pop first.

By the way, this Qimonda memory is rubbish! Wht ever happened to good old Samsung 2.8ns DDR2 ?! Shame....

    Regards

    Andy

    Nice work Zakelwe

The card is a lot of fun to bench. It can take a lot of voltage, scales nicely with cold and overclocks pretty good

    Nature @ 1080/500/2754

That's a 135% OC on the core and a 200% oc on the shader

    My setup:

I'll do a full run of 3DMark when I start benching for the contest again

, excellent core overclock .. 135% is fantastic.

Hmm, I'm hazarding a guess that is not the stock cooler in that picture maybe I will have to uprate mine to something a bit more beefy, like a milk bottle top.

Good luck with the competition and your subsequent benching.

    Regards

    Andy

Andy, could you show a screen of GPU-Z, it shows the memorybus width.

    It's likely yours has 128bits.

There are few different PCB designs, Vmods will not work for every 8400GS.

Hey, if you ain't blown up one then you ain't trying hard enough, I am sure wittekakker will agree. I lost my Papst 6212NM fan this weekend, RIP sadly missed. It is the best all purpose 12v axial fan for cooling in the world with 170mm diameter, 200cfm and the ability to cool your entire motherboard down in one go.

For Zeus here is the GPU-z.

    http://www.zen141854.zen.co.uk/bandwidth.jpg

It's a 64bit Leadtek 8400GS Extreme with 500Mhz memory default. With no volt mod this does 555Mhz out of the box and it makes a huge difference. An extra 50MHz mem is worth 300Mhz GPU with this little starved card I'm sure the XFX Dutch competition guys will confirm.

Well k|ngp|n ( hi mate, glad you are reading about the little scores still ) and others have asked for a photo but I can do better than this, after seeing FUGGER and K|P|n being interviewed by a hot cutie at CES 2008 where 5.8GHz made peoples panties wet I thought I'd show a similar video of my shed and a 0.7Ghz 8400GS ..

Sadly no hot cutie and I was a bit drunk and er, Oliver Stone let me down and Keira Knightly fell down one of the cracks in my shed floor and well, enough excuses, here it is

Firstly a guided tour of my shed whilst breaking a class record for 3dmark03. It's DIVX and 28MB so might take a long time to load and be blank. You can spot my dear departed Papst 6212Nm in action sob sob.

    http://www.zen141854.zen.co.uk/benching1fin_NEW.avi

Secondly another run of the trace of 3dmark with my top core MHz and voltage I think, but mainly it was to have a very small celebration to announce the shed back in running order.

    http://www.zen141854.zen.co.uk/benching2fin_NEW.avi.

Next I plan to do 8600GT SLi and then after that use 8800U air cooled to get 100 000 points in 06, or something, I've not decided yet, maybe I wont.

More seriously, the XFX 8400GS competition that is running is an excellent idea and we should do similar here if anyone is up for it, does anyone fancy an XS 3dmark competition similar to the Dutch XFX one and the one XS did years ago with, I think, Sabre cards ?

Let me know who is interested and we can go from there.

    Regards

    Andy
