I went with 2000 Grit and a metal polish paste like Autosol...

    Took 2 Minutes...

    Personally,
the grit you use is no where near the importance of the flatness of the base you lap it on. I've seen guys use a piece of glass from a window etc., and actually do more harm than good by taking too much off the corners or sides. Lap it in a circular motion, versus side to side or in one direction. Most glass is not flat. If you know someone who does machining, you may be able to use a granite surface plate as the base for the lapping. I would lap both the CPU and the HSF transfer/contact surface.

There's always 2500 grit if you know where to search... though I don't think that's very useful anyway... mine was shiny as hell but no temp difference

Friend: Do you have a spare PSU lying around?
    Me: No why?
Friend: My PSU just blew up, I think the second 8800GTX might have been too much for it to handle
Me: what PSU was that again?

    Wow, That's hot..

Have you thought about just getting an E6750? They are dirt cheap here like $175.00 and stock OC will give you a 2400 in Futuremark. I had one and the first time I booted it, I set it to 1600 FSB at 0.2 Less than recomended Volts on air...

No Joke, it's a cool CPU, never got over 49 Deg On Air..
