G0 Q6600 HSF for LAN mobility

I pack up my stuff and drive 5-30 miles every other week to LAN parties. This means my case is moved a lot. I'd like to get a good HSF for it but I have heard that large HSF units such as the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme are not for systems that move a lot.

I would like to be able to run my Q6600 at just 3GHz and have an HSF that isn't going to rip my mobo in half when I move it.

Honestly any heatsink should be fine. If mounted properly I've never heard of anyone actually damaging their mobo due to a heavy HSF. It's all just speculation. Now the heatsink contact might get ruined every once and a while if you move it a lot, but that's pretty easily remedied by a reapplication.

I agree stick with the TRUE and just be careful when you are moving it around.

Depending on your case, you can jury-rig a solution to fully support the large heatsink. One easy way would be to run relatively strong string to other parts of the case. I have a Scythe Infinity--if I were to do it, I'd probably run string from my 5.25" bays to a power supply screw (top) and a string from the 3.5" bays to the expansion slots. There are plenty of screws you could use to string internal support to. As it is--you only need to stop the top from moving. Tie it down on each end, but don't tie it directly to the heatsink (loop it around).

That, or when moving it keep it on its side with the heatsink motherboard & heatsink to the ground. You could grab some other coolers that would work, and I hear that the Scythe Mini Ninja is probably a better option for that.

you need someyhing compact and ''strong''. i think it is Xigmatek HDT-S983 (it is only 400g).... than comes Scythe Mine (with fans it is 560g).

OCZ Vindicator da Themaltake V1 also not bad...

you want 3 GHz... it is not problem for all these ones...

just put a backplate on the true and you will be golden, I don't think you could break the board with a proper backplate, unless its a cheap thin PCB

So as long as I handle the case carefully, the Ultra 120 Extreme should be fine?

I usually pick the case up in a vertical position and carefully set it down in a horizontal position on my back seat where it won't move much.

I've heard that due to defective mounting supplies from the manufacturer, the Ultra 120 Extreme has a bit of "play" on the board. I would imagine that could effect the damage possibilities if a sudden and rapid movement of the case was to occur.

Any insights on that?

I think all large heatsinks like the TRUE move a little bit, but if you are careful I do not believe that it would cause too much damage to your motherboard.

there havent really been cases of people breaking their boards because of heatsinks. Any will do fine... I used to drag my comp around to such distances with a single stage on cpu lol
