My Q6600 - First Intel Overclock (Advice Needed)

What are respectable temps for Q6600 chips at load and at idle?

At what temperature would you begin to worry?

Approximately how much voltage starts to get very risky?

    Thank you so much!

65 C coretemp temperature readout per on full Prime load,
wouldnt pump more than 1,45V (real) into for 24/7 , but you will sooner run into temperature problems than high voltage problems with quads
Sometimes a good slap in the face is all you need

    Bios my arss.....
I can fix this problem with a hardware mod....

When you say real do you mean CPU-Z or Bios?

I'm seeing 61/59/49/49 in core temp but the single "CPU TEMP" in asus pc probe says 65. Ideas?

Is that a SLACR (read GO) CPU or a B3 ?, really high temps on 2 cores, you sure the CPU cooler is well seated ? I also have some variation but mostly on one core that is about 4-6°C hotter than the rest , yours is over 12 degrees which seems much to me or you got a very bad IHS or bad mounting...

I presume those temps are with the stock intel cooler ?

And indeed 1.45 or such is max volts on air to be on the safe side, but those with a beefy CPU cooler and not the stock Intel... so if you want something more out of the CPU it's time to invest in decent cooling....
Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

From what i have seen L737B's are among the best. Good luck with that chip.

Unless you are the "lucky" one like me that got the worst L737B among the best...

Its a G0. I believe its well seated- it came with four screws that come out through the back and little springs/nuts to hold down the CPU cooler. Those temps are with an apogee GT cooler.

    Hmmm define IHS?

I'm also using Coollaboratory Liquid Pro as my thermal compound.

Either your IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) is whack from the factory, you have a bad mount, or you did not prepare the CPU and waterblock surfaces for the LMP.

The P5K premium is a great board for doing 3.6Ghz with a GO at decent volts. What is the "vid" on your CPU?

    LMP?

I just reseated the processor and now I'm showing 45/48/35/39 idle and it shoots up to close to 80 as soon as prime starts going. How is that possible?

    Grrr...

Ok so I reseated the processor again-- this time I just globbed on the coollaboratory pro thermal material. I was always told that less is best with thermal interface material so I always took a thin drop and spread it out as much as possible. This time I just pup a nice little glob on there and let the pressure of the headsink do the work.

    43/47/40/40 load (1.288v CPU-z, approx 1.315 Bios)

P.S. How do I turn my processor up more without having to turn the ram up? I'm at the max divider I believe (333Mhz) such that 9*400 = 3600 and if I run that 1:1 my ram runs at spec. I'd like to keep the ram in spec but up the processor.

In order to put up the processor more you have to do it by multiplier... but since the Q6600 Max multi is x9 the highest you can go on 400fsb is 9x400 = 3.6GHz... From there you would have to go by fsb to overclock... Im sure if you relax those ram timings you can push them a little more.

So there is no way to run the ram slower via a divider? So for each increase in FSB I will have to increase my ram speed?

I think you're applying the thermal compound wrong. I tried to do it the AS5 way and do a line across the cores and that got me to 80C+ so what I did was apply it all around the processor and get a credit card and make sure all parts were ever . That got me to down to 36C Idle stock I use Tuniq TX2 grease , best 1$ I've ever spent.

I can't seem to get it less than 800 Mhz after turning my FSB to 400+. I only see ways to turn the ram up not down...

If I have to run my memory at 800 Mhz, it is not possible to have an FSB > 400?

I want to try 4Ghz CPU, 800 MHZ memory. Possible?

lowest you can go is 1:1, in other words, your FSB speed, 900 MHz is the lowest you can go at 4GHz and 9 multi,

by real I meant what is CPU-Z showing when you load all cores (the voltage youget after Vdrop and Vdroop)
