    Crucial Ballistix Tracer Question

    Hi all,

I got a pair of Crucial Ballistix Tracer (2 x 1 gb). This is the PC8500 version. When I open cpu-z and click on the memory tab, cpu-z says I got PC6400 memory. At this moment, I want to add 2 x 1 gb of memory, because I want to run vista the smooth way. Can i buy the PC6400 version of these crucials, or should i buy the PC8500 version? The difference in price is 20€ (belgium). In other words: is there any difference between the PC6400 or the PC8500 or can the PC6400 run at PC8500 speeds without problems?

    Thanks in advance,

    Techie

They're binned versions of the 6400 IC's that's why SPD still reads those values. EPP profiles should read 533MHz 5-5-5-15 2.2V, I have the same ones here. Mine do DDR2-1200 4-4-4-4 2.2V, DDR2-1350 at 5-5-5-15 at 2.2V and 1460 5-5-5-8 should easily be possible at higher volts, but it's pointless. I've messed once at 2.35V at 1450 5-6-6-25 and I didn't even try lower timings. I won't risk them at the slightest.
    I run them at DDR2-1000/DDR2-1066 5-5-5-15 at 2V usually or DDR2-800 4-4-4-4 1T at 1.9V.

I've not seen a D9 Crucial PC2-6400 that can't run DDR2-1066 at the same voltage and lower. If I were you, I'd get the PC2-6400 version of Crucial D9 RAM. Beware though, I've had a pair die before with 2.25V continuous use after 4 weeks.

    You spoke too soon KTE

cuz i actually have a pair of 6400's that can't do 1066 at the same voltage.

I got some pretty crappy sticks that won't go over 1000 at 2.2v

Well I've never seen it though

It's good to know the info ineedaname. Never known of a D9 before today which couldn't reach those MHz. Sorry about that mate.
