    Copper Stock

Where do you guys get the copper stock for making your pots? I have looked for copper but its like 500 bucks for 3.5" wide at a foot long length. I guess before I make assumptions, I should ask how much these things usually sell for. Im not wanting to buy one, so admins leave this alone. I just want to know if money is lost in making and then selling these things, because copper looked expensive as hell to me.

    Thanks,

It's current price is between 3.60 per in^3 and 2.80 per in^3. Larger cross sections are cheaper, and longer bars are cheaper so a 3.5" diameter bar 12" long should cost you $415 if we figure it is @3.60/in^3.

I don't know of a place that sells 3.5" bar 1ft long at reasonable prices, so I can believe that you've found a place that has a high markup. That's the metals biz, unless you can buy large qty you get to make their Corvette payment for that month.
You see what you did there? You got between me and the coffee, now this creates a SITUATION!

Hmm. Its not that i want to just make one pot. I was thinking about how you guys are able to sell a solid copper pot for only 100 bucks.

Alpha, i would presume that different countries have different pricing on stock.
For example eastern european countries lately are selling reasonably cheap pots.
Another thing that would help lower the price is to buy in volume, or have the machinist buy for you (since they are more likely to want volume).

All this is just my thoughts, ive never actually bought my own stock before.

Above poster is right I believe, metal seems to be cheap in eastern europe. Although I've never seen solid copper anywhere near $100, that's about what you'd pay for alu...

Other than that, buddy up with a machinist who'll sell to you at cost, that's probably the cheapest you'll find short of buying used copper parts. If you're looking at a two-piece design you could design the base and just attach it to a 2" section of pipe.

As far as JB weld, it should work... if not soldering is also an option. Brazing isn't necessary under these pressures, all you have to worry about is using something that stands the temperatures.. so many epoxies/glues would be OK.

well.. first off, as a private person you don't get much discount, if any compare to a company which can have everything from 50% to 80% discount... the companys doesn't want to sell in small quantitys.

1' = 12", 4" (100mm) is enough for a cpu pot to be honest. your 500bucks is now 167usd for each pot in copper.

good point tim, another thing to mention: is it really necesarry to have it be 3.5" wide? i mean the distance between holes in a lga775 board is 2.5" i believe... so wouldn't 2.25" be better for mounting?

lga has 72x72mm holes dimension so 4" from center on one hole in slant to second center of hole
so you can make pot with max 97,82mm (3.85") diameter if you want use m4 screws

72x72, thats correct phytagoras says, to get the diagonal take sqrt(a^2+b^2),

    sqrt(72^2+72^2)= 102mm -> 4inch
