The problem with the 655 is that its so damn big. Sometimes It's not easy to mount it where you want.

the mcp355 with XSPC Top + MicroRes is Smaller than the MCP655 + MicroRes.
the mcp355 with XSPC Reservoir Top for DDC is Smaller than the MCP655 + MicroRes.
both MCP355 + XSPC Top or Reservoir Top perform better than the MCP655 + Microres. By perform better they provide more head pressure which is probably the largest determining factor when buying a pump. (other than size, which the MCP355 is smaller also)

I will not say one is better than the other hands-down. I also cannot attest to reliability numbers, as long as you do not buy a DDC2, which are the only Laing pumps that I have heard of with unacceptable failure rates.
What I WILL say is:
There are 3 pumps here to be concerned with, not 2.
- The MCP350 is a quiet, small form-factor pump that has lower performance than the other two, even with custom tops.
- The MCP355 is still quiet, but is the loudest of the three, small form-factor (but not when using a custom top for peak performance), and is the best performer once you add a custom top. Also, it is the most expensive of the three once you do add that top.
- The MCP655 is the quietest, largest, and best performer in a stock configuration unless you have a very restrictive loop.
So basically, you have four criteria that you need to look at in your pump:
- How concerned are you with noise ? None of these pumps will be audible over >2000rpm fans, but if your goal is silence, you need a 655 Vario.
- How much space do you have in the case to fit the pump ? The 655 is easily the largest. The 355 once you add a custom top will take up almost as much room, unless you use the side-mounted inlet, which makes the custom top almost pointless, since it kills the flow rate of the pump.
- Do you really need all that head pressure ? If you have very restrictive blocks, or a lot of tubing and components, you should stick with the 355 with a custom top. It really is the best, performance-wise.
- How much cash are you willing to spend ? The 350 is the cheapest and is still a very good performer. If you are running a low- to mid-restriction loop, you really can't get better for the price. It also fits in a very small space.
Things to avoid, would be buying a 350 and a custom top for it. In the not so distant past, this was a very good option to go with, but with the introduction of the 355, it is really the only option for a custom top. The 655 will be cheaper and better than a 350 with a custom top, and the 355 will be much more powerful than a 350 with the same top. The niche market that still exists for the 350 are those who don't want to spend a lot, and need a small, quiet pump. The rest, tend to stick to the 655 for silence, and the 355 for performance.
I think the 655 with a reservoir should be the most expensive and take up the most space, that's the main reason why I went with the 355 instead because of the fact that I can integrate it to a highly rated and attractive xspc reservoir with decent capacity, my setup will only require 3 loops, one run from the 355+res to the radiator, one from the rad to cpu block, and the last one from cpu back to the 355+res. can't beat killing 2 birds with 1 stone really. But I still love my 655 because of the fact that it perform, and never failed me.

Maybe I read this wrong... but are you putting 3 pumps in the same loop ? You say 3 loops, but you only mention one block, which is the CPU...
I guess I am just confused as to what possible situation would require three separate loops when one large loop would be more efficient.
Also, you are assuming people use a reservoir at all. If anyone is concerned about space, they use a T-Line.

Stupid thread is Stupid - this thing is over a year old. nowadays its quite obvious that the ddc3.2 with a top is better than any way you put a d5.... IDK if you guys have actually run a DDC without any fans on but it doesn't make any noise audible from more than 2 feet away... if you have 2 fans in your system you definitely cant hear your pump lol.
I have (1) 655 still going after 5 years now, and I am running (2) 355 with this XSPC top, and a 350 with this TOP and I must say the 655 is very strong so far, but I do like the 355 the best with th XSPC top. Unless you want to go crazy and go for this Uber 655 fully modded

I just don't like the 355's for the heat. Other then that I would be using them as they take less space and are more powerful in head pressure. But just to add something here....D5's still rock! Plus they will not try to light your sound proofing material with the overheated bottoms.

I just can't resist a zombie thread.
I owned the original version of the CPX pump back in 2004. It lasted for 3 months before it sprung a leak and shorted out. I hope the new version is more reliable. It sure was quiet though, and made in Canada too. I really wanted it to be worthwhile
I've been running dual 350s in series since then. Silent and reliable.
OCZ, where life-time warranty means until we're out of stock!
not even one of these would work?
http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g30/...ies-Page1.html
it would be expensive, but I know what you mean you can buy fittings to make it fit and go at weird angles these days. that is a tight fit like you said though....
I must be bored responding to a thread over a year old, oh well. I've had my D5 since 2005. It's been in three different cases. Never had a problem. 3/8 tubing boiled and fitted with ease. I considered getting the DDC because of the Alphacool top but I'd be crazy to substitute dependability for attachments. At the end of the day, for some of us, it could mean putting a couple of thousand on the line. I don't gamble.
Well, I guess I must be the exception. Have a DDC2 pump w/the XSPC top.....yes, the old DDC2 with the orange impeller. Been in four different loops over the last 1 1/2 years.....still works without incident, very quiet.....very dependable. I have a new DDC 3.2 sitting on a shelf as a replacement in case the DDC2 fails, but the 3.2 is just collecting dust, unused, almost forgotten.
I've had the mcp655 for a few days... It's noisier than my previous air setup :S I have it running atm. at the lowest speed and it is the loudest thing in my case. Yes, louder than the fans. It's quite annoying. I'm surprised at how noisy it is. I've been reading loads prior to the purchase and I was sadly disappointed.
