    Gigabyte GA-890XA-UD3 790X+SB850

I stumbled across this board on newegg, looks like it just came available. I do a search by southbridge on newegg every once in a while to see if things like this would happen. I looks like AMD is going to let motherboard companies use the southbridge on the 790 based stuff based on this board being available. So it supports all the features of the SB850 like sata 6Gbps they also added usb 3.0 to the board. I cann't find anywhere if it supports core unlocking. It does say it supports the AMD 6 core cpu's though. The main issue I see with it is that its priced at $139.99 so I don't see the point of chossing it over the 890GX based motherboards.

It has 8+2 phase instead of 4+1 on the 890GX. It also has no IGP. Should use less power also.

If this is a 790X board why did Gigabyte name this the GA-890XA-UD3 if it isn't based on the 890 chipset? Thats kinda misleading.

Write them an angry letter shaking your fist. Personally I like the board. It gives you waaaaay more usb ports than the gx, better power, and no onboard video for those of us who don't like it. I think it's priced a little high though since it doesn't have onboard video and it's cooling isn't any better. What do you lose in terms of 790 nb vs. 890 nb the board only supports 2 vid cards whats the big deal at least they give you x8 x8. I mean all the new features are on the sb this time around anyways. I've never owned a Gigabyte but I think this is a nice board. But not having onboard video or the new NB it does still seem at least $20 too pricey compared to the gx.

I'm not arguing that it's not a good board. I just wonder what seperates this 790X/SB850 and a 890X/SB850.

i am not sure there is much of a difference because the the southbridges on amd motherboards usually provide the new features. the new number for the 890X shouldn't mean much because neither motherboard offers onboard video. unless the 890X offers two 16X pcie 2.0 slots instead of two 8X slots. I don't think that will be the case though. the main thing will probably be the fact that the newer boards will have newer revisions of things like onboard audio and lan controllers and that kind of thing. of course this is just speculation on my part.

I always thought the vanilla "X" boards lacked crossfire. FX/GX had crossfire and X didn't which is why they were cheaper. Interesting.

    Nope, 16x, or 8x 8x CrossFire

It's basically 790GX without IGP and on a different manufacturing process.

I own this board. And..well..not too impressed. The board does not function right with the 1055T. The Beta bios [f4e] does not work at all, and I was hoping that if the new bios update worked, it would fix the misreading problem. Windows see it as a 1055 2.8ghz, but in the bios it reads as a 3.3ghz. And in AOD, it reads as a 3.4 and sometimes clocks to 3.5 Ghz on ALL cores. CPU-Z see's 3.3ghz. awful...

The NB and SD heat syncs are not secured to the board very well.. The wobble, and I don't think their contact with the chip is very good. Because....the temp of the board is 47C. I am sure that is within the operating range, but I do not feel right with temps like that. My other Gigabyte board almost has the same configuration, and it keeps the board temps in the low 40c.

There is also two version of this board. Rev.1 and Rev 2. [I have rev 1.]

Maybe they fixed that crap with rev 2. But I am not impressed with this board at all.

Words of caution with the new AMD processors and with the heat syncs on NB and SB. $150 or bust? At least BUST for now.

I wouldn't waste my money on a 790X chipset when the 890FX's are a few dollars more
