    Verizon cooks up 200Mbps FiOS

    http://techreport.com/discussions.x/13586

Whereas Verizon's current network can split up 622Mbps of downstream bandwidth and 155Mbps of upstream bandwidth to 32 households, GPON can supply those same households with 2.4Gbps down and 1.2Gbps up. With GPON, Gizmodo says Verizon is currently seeing peak download rates of 400Mbps and sustained download rates of 200Mbps.
    ...
The company can update its existing network to GPON fairly effortlessly, too—"technicians just have to swap out the boxes on each end of the fiber cable they've already laid," Gizmodo explains.
    ...
    Yay!

Its funny how they are now starting to offer faster connections, yet destroying our only means to utilize it (bitorrent). Most sites cap you at 128 or 256 unless you pay etc.

Comcast just upgraded my area to 25/1.5 down/up. tho outside WA it nosedives fast.

That s smaller than some of our cities. People forget how big the US of A is and how much work is involved in doing *anything* on a National scale.

well on a home network sharing an adsl connection by att 6.0 down and 1.5 up

On the only wired PC using windows XP or Vista Ill hover around 600-700kb down and only 77-79kb up and there are 3 other PCs on the network which are all wireless connected...

doesnt make any sense at all...

In china they offer TV (on demand) on one half of your connection and the rest is used for internet. Which is why they strangle torrents, as you'd download for free what they've been planning to sell you each time you watch it.

That has nothing to do with it.

There are more people in Europe and yet the general rule is quicker internet.

The USA having these slower rates is either down to lack of state investment or market forces dictating quick upgrade paths.

In Europe, government either subsidise or put policies in place to stimulate growth.

It has nothing to do with population size of individual states (sorry countries) in Europe.

Right that is for 8-10 hours at most a day if you work from home. In my mind it would be a complete waste for rest of the day, unless you could host some server or it or something.

Youre kidding right? Torrents SUCK especially for speed. IF you really want what youre looking for on torrents, you need to get into FlashXP FTP world or hit newsgroups... Stresses my connnection and im top tier FIOS speed. 5/30

I love how all these companies are showing off these speeds but they are forgetting to say how they will cherry pick the areas for these "futuristic" speeds. I remember how the CEO of Comcast, Brian Roberts during a DOCSIS 3.0 presentation said how these new speeds are the result of competition and lack of regulation and he told the audience to make sure their congressmen knew that. I laugh at that statement because here in Minnesota the only competition for Comcast is Qwest who can barely hit 1.5mbps unless your practically on top of the Central Office. It is pretty sad that the fastest connection I can get is 8mbps partly due to the fact that there is no competition and regulation. I do not think regulation is always the answer, but when there is basically a monopoly or oligopoly I think it could very well help the situation rather than worsen it. $60 for an 8mbps is pathetic for 2007 and is the result of limited competition and greedy corporations. I read news the other day that the FCC is going to make plans to regulate the industry but I later found out that the man in charge of the FCC, Kevin Martin, has reportedly taken bribes from telecom companies like Verizon... Many people who I discuss this topic with say slow broadband speeds are not an issue but I strongly disagree. I believe that they will become a problem for the U.S. when other countries are out producing us because of their up-to-date infrastructure. Something has to be done now to stop all the lobbying and bull that is ruining what we like to call "broadband."
