    Cool My 1991 Toyota Supra

Behold ladles and jellybeans - my soon-to-be-17 year old Toyota Supra!

After giving up on most cars made past 1995 and not wishing to have my performance options spoiled by emissions legislation in the UK (no cars built/registered prior to August 1992 need to have a Catastrophic Converter (yes, that was a deliberate pun!)), i decided to go for something quintessentially 80's in style and feel....you have to admit - pop-up headlamps are very cool

I always liked these Supra's, far more elegant than the loud and brash jellybean Mk4's (only good thing about them were the mechanicals, the bodystyling and interior were 'meh...').

It's built for going round these things in Europe and Japan called 'corners' and while its ultimately a GT/Cruiser, dont let it fool you, it'll give pretty much anything a run for its money!

    Specs:

    2954cc 7M-GTE Straight 6
    Toyota CT-26 Turbocharger
    HKS Turbo Elbow
    HKS T-16 Exhaust (elbow back)

    R154 5-speed Manual Gearbox
TEIN HR Coilovers Front & Rear (Height Adjustable)
Fensport Brake Discs (Front & Rear)
    PAGID Fast Road Brake Pads

17" Matrix Shadow Alloys on 235/45/17 Michelin Pilot Premacy's

Not running any engine mods as yet as it's currently being rebuilt (new rod and main bearings, thrust washers, gaskets, 20thou oversize pistons, water pump, oil pump, ARP head studs, new valve seat inserts & valves), but once done, i'm moving over to the N/A models rocker covers with the Lexus IS300 Coil-on-Plug System (removing the ugly ass coil pack), and shimming the wastegate to bump me up to 11psi of boost (if needed, the elimination of the stock cat and elbow means i'm already spooling quicker and building more boost).

Interior is Grey Leather - although a recent theft from the interior means its now slashed to and will cost £1200 to repair, so i'm throwing a grey cloth interior in for the time being.

Has all the goodies - Electric Windows, Electric Mirrors, Electric Seats, Fully Adjustable Climate Control, Cruise Control - all of which works perfectly!

    See? I'm retro all round!

lol, do they actually do a smog test? or just check the ecu readings? cuz with a quick tune/chip you can get the computer to not report anything about emissions.

Two speed idle test for that, even on vehicles from this year (although vehicles from 2001 also have to have an NOx test)

    Allowed 3.5% CO2 and 1200ppm particulate emissions

If it fails at 800rpm, but passes at 1500rpm, it gets an overall pass.

Last time it was tested, it got 0.12% CO2 and 580ppm particulate

The ECU on this is not OBD compatible - proprietary TCCS system, no monitoring available besides Vf.

Hehe - thanks for that - i do intend to clean up the engine bay, but the newly engine has to be shoehorned in first before i can do anything. I need to rewire a fair bit of the engine bay first though - too many brittle/frayed/worn cables. Had to get a new (yes, NEW) crank position sensor....that was fscking expensive too!

Maybe a new O2 sensor as well....just for kicks

    MkIV's had the 2JZ-GE/2JZ-GTE (3.0, 2994cc)

    Japanese MkIII's had the option of the 1G-FE/1G-GE/1G-GTE (2.0), the 1JZ-GTE (2.5) and the 7M-GE/7M-GTE (3.0, 2954cc) - all of them straight 6's

The reason i like the straight 6 engine is because its inherently balanced, meaning smooth power delivery, and not just in terms of NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness)

The 7M, because of its long stroke, makes for an incredibly torquey engine - plenty of grunt on the bottom end.

Granted, a straight 6 isnt necessarily the most practical, and a V6 would suffice, but a 7 bearing engine vs a 5 bearing engine....i'd rather go with the option thats likely to last the longest

I need to re-do some of the paintwork - i was just going to get the rear arches sanded, re-primed and blended, the front bumper and rear spoiler stripped, primed and resprayed in their entirety - but for the moment, will have to suffice for the 280bhp monster thats going in the sizeable hole i can stand in :p

Nice car, but watch for the head gaskets as apparently they are very fragile and costly to repair.

Any car with an overhead cam is gonna be a nightmare to change out a head gasket. Even worse on turbo or supercharged cars.

Its a nice car. You must be pretty daring with that thing given the price per litre of gasoline where you live. I don't care about driving a 6 litre car over here in the US, but you must feel the pinch at least a little.

Well £70 per fill of the tank every other day!

Bear in mind though - the price is 90% tax :/

The headgaskets on Mk3's are well known - i've had one before this one ('88 Normally Aspirated pre-facelift) and the HG on that went. The reason for it is because Toyota was going to use a different headgasket originally, and torque spec for that was 56lb/ft. They later changed the gasket type but not the torque spec. Set of ARP head studs and a regular gasket will see you able to push 12-psi of boost without much issue.

Changing the head gasket on these is a pretty simple job. Remove the exhaust downpipe, unbolt the fuel lines and wiring, take the crossover pipe off, remove valve covers, take out headbolts - lift off the whole inlet/head/exhaust/turbo in one go. Remove old buggered gasket, scrape clean, put new gasket on, studs in the block, lower the head over it, install the studs and voila - all done.

The HG usually blows between the water galleries on these, although in the event that you end up with oil/water mixing - you have to strip it down and rebuild with new bearings, oil pump and water pump.

Might as well go for a new set of oversize pistons (mine are ceramic topped, 20 thou over) while its stripped down!

First of all, i have to say this....

    "YEEEEHAH!!!"

    *ahem*.

    Sorry

Basically, i just got a bunch of goodies off my mate ed. First of them being a 57 trim CT26 Turbo (hybrid, Garrett T4 CHRA, CT26 housing)....for FREE!

Second, i got a set of 2JZ coils from a late model aristo VVTI that i can use to replace the butt ugly stock coil pack and finally fit a set of the far superior N/A cam covers.

Third, he just offered me a respray for FREE (labour wise) if i get the materials needed. This is for a bare shell respray in Toyota 3E5 Red...

I'm all buzzy and 'ding!' right now

Very nice! I personally preferred the MkIV even though it was a tubby car, I just liked it's curves. That car will be a downright beast though, goodluck tuning/building her

I refuse to participate in any debate with creationists because doing so would give them the "oxygen of respectability" that they want.
Creationists don't mind being beaten in an argument. What matters to them is that I give them recognition by bothering to argue with them in public.
