So what's the cheapest a person's gonna be able to get into a DECENT duallie setup? I know $11 each for s604s, but something with a bit of oomph and staying power, for rendering, crunching and gaming?

The cheapest decent one would be a dual socket 771 with a pair of woodcrests in it..
Production would be better with a Q6600 single socket rig though.
The board would be close to $400.00
Chips are variable from woods to clovers to harpertowns..$200-$3000
    Then memory..$400.00
    Good 600w PSU: $160.00+

If someone wants to do a low end one show me a NEW sales receipt for a dual socket 771 board and I have a pair of 5120 Extra Special woods that I will let them go for the cost of shipping.
    Like these:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819117084
With the BSEL mod that would give you 4 cores at maybe 2450/4mb/1400
Even got a pair of Intel HS's for them that will cool them fine.
This is for someone who's going to use them on the WCG team.
Might do close to 10,000 a day at 2450mhz and if you buy the right board you can upgrade later to clovers or Harpertowns.
Yea, Mama Dave will be watching!

X7DAL-E or X7DAE, but a 5400 chipset might go farther..

My estimations for a base Skull Trail system is about $10,000, done properly, complete with LiLi 343B, two PCP&C 1.2kW-SRs, two QX9775s, 8 GB of ram, five SAS X15.6s, Areca/LSI, two 1 TB Ultrastars, two Plextors (one Blue Ray), three 9800 Ultras and X-Fi Elite. Sorry.. only air cooling. For water cooling, add $1,000. No monitor included lol Come to think of it, $10,000 may be too low a budget!

Single 1200w psu should do all of that fine. If any question toss a ~500w in to power drives and water cooling equip.. and one gpu if you want.

yeah... i thought it would only end at the board side $3000-3600 but then realized it took 2 psu's and if your spending that much on a rig, you definitely need 3 gfx cards. 6 raptors in raid 0... and on and on.... So i gave up on skulltrail because i have much better things to do with that kind of cash. :X

10g's might be on the middle side iany from your build. :P

I really like SkullTrail, but everytime I do the minimum for a projected build, it just asks for more!

I don't think my wallet can get raped that much

Just a quick note about Skulltrail. You need a PSU with two 8-pin CPU (secondary ATX) connectors, or one 8-pin and two 4-pin CPU connectors that can be combined. A lot of PSU's don't have this, including some 1000W power supplies. The ones that do (like the PCP&C 1000W & 1200W) are usually very expensive.

    An 8-pin + 4-pin will work.

Holy crap.. PCH-DL part 2? Close enough and about damn time. Would have liked to see what the maximum FSB was at a 6x multiplier, wonder if 2000MHz would have been possible with better cooling. So many questions and no way to get an answer w/o buying one.

edit: 2000MHz with 1:1 memory @ 5-5-5-15 and praying the FB-DIMMs didn't burn themselves to death.
