    Verizon FiOs offers symmetric 20/20

    Did not see this posted
ome residents of New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey who live inside the boundaries of Verizon's FiOS network will be the first to be able to take advantage of Verizon's new 20/20 FiOS service. As the name implies, 20/20 FiOS is a symmetrical 20Mbps connection (same speed in both directions), and it's one of the first symmetrical services to target the consumer market.

Available today, 20/20 will cost $64.99 per month and will include Verizon's Internet Security Suite and 1GB of online backup (up to 50GB can be purchased at "competitive rates").

Here is to that cable congestion that is sure to go down because of this

So they gone from 15 to 20Mbit? While others go from 100 to 1000Mbit...wow? :p

But its nice, hopefully it can grow more. So MMOs and such can get into a content on demand state.

the 20 upload is the more significant number here, who cares about down past 2megabytes/sec?

Seriously... 20mbit down kicks ass but it's near impossible to find a place where you can download files at that speed.

20mbit up though... damn. What's the use? Does hosting a server not break the TOS with the 20/20 package?

    Famous last words?

I could have said the same with 1Mbit for many years ago. Now everything less than 100mbit is slow. You kinda get used to it when you download from MS, like 5.5GB Exchange 2007 with 60-70MB/sec. Then when you sit again with 10, 20Mbit or 100mbit it feels..very slow

$65 a month is pretty reasonable for those speeds, IMO, even if other parts of the world get the same or better speeds cheaper (eg- Japan). I'm really grinding my teeth over Verizon's laxity in rolling out fiber to more metropolitan areas like Raleigh, NC.

    Let the file sharing commence!

But seriously, more ISP's need to move to a symmetrical network and un-bottleneck this damn country's unbalanced web.

Whats cooking my grits is that Cleveland, Ohio is the fiber hub for the entire country. All cross country fiber lines run through Cleveland, and Verizon still doesnt have FIOS here. What the hell?

    Wow, that's very selective...
This really means nothing if it's not available to everyone who's currently with verizon. There are still plenty of cities/states on the east coast who still cannot get FIOS let alone 20/20 making this very moot.

Is this the small tri-state area that it's offered in or those states in general?

FIOS isnt exlcusive to those states. I think there is a FIOS area on the west coast and for some reason I think part of Texas has it, but Im not sure.

FIOS... psssh really I could care less anymore since my state sucks and we are stuck with 1-2 providers period you have your Cable, then you have DSL, no other choices thanks to lovely state laws.

I'd love it, wish they'd roll it in my area but doubt that will happen within the next 5-10 years.

Verizon will only choose places that are of high value areas. (people with money) It spends billions and needs to recoop the costs. So if you live a poor area, sorry, not happ'n.

Yes, a good part of texas has fios.
I have it, 15mbit/2mbit, $44.95 a month and great service, always up.
Now 20mbit up for another $20.00/month I would do.
That's 2500K upload minus the packet overhead, so maybe 2375-2400K effective..That is sweet..I've seen 1908K on a download with the 15mbit line.

Yeah, I could punish some sites with that type of line, hell, you could race on some crappy outer ring sites with that line.

Finally a nice symmetrical connection, wish Comcast and the like would do the same here in MN. $65 is pretty reasonable for that connection imo compared what I pay for now ($55/per month for 8mbps )

Well my area has money, but its a smaller sized area 20-30k people so surely I'd be out of there marketing just because they want only big cities right now to help minimize there expenses with laying out the fiber.

Yes, of course. That's true too. They start with high-dense rich areas. When they've made some profits in these areas then they will slowly start doing other lower cost and less densely popluated areas. It's a financially sound move, but sucks for many people.

Granted Verizon's customer service is horrid, but in the 8 months I've had Fios I haven't had any need to deal with them. After years of suffering with Comcast I have nothing but praise for Fios.

That's not 100% true, I've talked to a few employees who have been working on expanding fiber optics for a few years now. It's mostly for businesses from what I've been told. Even though they create fiber optic lines underground in your area it's not being offered.
