    8600GTS@1GHz with stock cooler

Today I do some benches with Palit 8600GTS card.

    Test config:
Single Palit 8600GTS (stock air + 90-mm fan)
    Core2Duo E6600 @ 9x418=3763MHz 1.475V (watercooled)
    Abit AW9D-MAX (PCI-E@155MHz)
    2x512Mb D9GMH @ 1045MHz 4-4-4-12 2T 2.45V
    PSU Chieftec 620W
    ForceWare 165.01

First I tested it with stock clocks 675(1458)/2016 MHz and got these results:

    3DMark01: 47081
    3DMark03: 20275
    3DMark05: 12280
    3DMark06: 6061

Then I overclocked card to 769(1620)/2376 MHz wthout voltmods:

    3DMark01: 52048
    3DMark03: 22767
    3DMark05: 13774
    3DMark06: 6751

After pencil Vgpu-mod (from 1.35V to 1.68V) I got 999(2106) MHz on core with stock cooler GPU temp was +50°c idle and +74°c load.
Palit 8600GTS has non-reference PCB and not overvoltage protected
Vmem-mod do not help increase memory clock, I tried up to 2.30V (from 2.10V default Vmem).

    3DMark01: 55498 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=9231250
    3DMark03: 25001 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=5449465
    3DMark05: 15493 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=3265747
    3DMark06: 7505 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=2509096

No screens because there is not final results. I'll try cold water on GPU and more voltage soon...

That's pretty impressive, slap a better cooler on the core and sink the memory chips you could probably go even higher, no overvolt protection is a huge plus there

Tried watercooling on GPU and higher Vgpu today...
Bad news - with 1.70V and higher Vgpu this card fall to black screen after 15-20 seconds in 3d mode
May be it is OVP or capacitors issue - I don't know.

I hold Vgpu=1.69V and got only 1012(2160) MHz GPU clock with watercooling... 13MHz increase compared to stock cooled.
GPU temp was 44c idle and 62°c load.
Memory overclock increased from 2376MHz to 2406MHz with small zalman aluminium heatsinks + 90-mm fan.

Before testing I set CPU and mem clocks a bit higher than yesterday. You can see new clocks and results at screens:

    3DMark01: 56397 - #4 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=9231778

    3DMark03: 25326 - #2 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=5450766

    3DMark05: 15701 - WR http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=3269207

    3DMark06: 7606 - #4 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=2518186

Next time I test it with cold water, 4000+ MHz @ CPU + shader clock bios-mod and memory timings mod may help a little

XFX Fatal1ty, 90mm fan over HS.
Only 51c under load and no artifacts @ 999MHz - nice What voltages was used?

Whoa, where did you get the pencil mod from? I'm interested in it
I do voltmods myself and don't need to use any guides/datasheets/etc...
Later I'll post pics with voltmods for this card, stay tuned

    Nice initial results S_A_V!

What I am wondering are the temps with cold water. Aren't you using a watertemp of about 4C? Compared to stock cooling, you only gained 12C under load which is quite bad. Watercooling with water at ambient temp should result in a bigger gap. So cold water should be even a lot better than that.. :/

Your ram is very nice too. I can only run 4 3 3 4 at that speed

Edit: oh you did not use cold water yet, but even for watercooling, the temps are not that good. Either that card runs really hot at that voltage or your watercooling gear is not that good.

~1.65 and 90mm fan over passive HS

It's a very good overclocker. I have a ZOGIS 8600GT too, 800/900 max. with mods.
No time to run 3dmark etc...next week

Final results with +13°c water at CPU and GPU.
120-mm fan over front side of the card.

Nice scores and congrats on the WR!

But somewhat funny to see how "bad" the scores are compared to 7300GT SLi. They are not that much faster.

Very interesting, wondre what they'll do in SLI with 1GHz core clocks. Does anyone know if the Asus 8600GT PCB is a reference PCB or in-house design? Afraid to pick up a card and find out it's locked down on the voltages through OVP

Judging from the pictures it's almost reference. I can't be sure though. If you want to make sure you get a reference design, get yourself an EVGA or a BFG.

caligula, maybe you should try out the Palit 8600GT pencil mod, especially since the card got really cheap lately. Someone over on XtremPC Forum confirmed that it works on the Gainward 8600GT Golden Sample too.

    It's not the reference.
NB, I already have the GT, but with very poor results (820/840).

    hi S_A_V

I´ve got the same Palit GF 8600GTS too, but the Voltage controller is not the BN-9B C06 ones.

on my Card is an "BN-9D L0G" (see the Attached pic)

Can I make the Vmod from your HowTo too?

    thx

Only if your card has the same part number ("PM8884" on sticker) and initaial Rgpu (7.95k Ohm).
