Intel Larrabee to launch as a high-end graphics(fudzilla)

    http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?op...=3711&Itemid=1

    But first as professional solution

We have already said that Larrabee will enter the market as a professional processor, but as soon as Intel starts producing it for the gaming market, Larrabee will become a high-end graphic chip.

This will definitely put a lot of pressure on Nvidia and ATI, but Intel needs the high-end market to change consumers' minds about Intel’s graphics.

Intel has traditionally been the worst gaming graphics chip manufacturer and Nvidia and ATI are simply doing a much better job, even with the integrated stuff. Intel must change this in order to get into the discrete market.

Intel needs a Halo effect the way Microsoft has done it with their Xbox 360 and other video games. Apple has done it with iPods and iPhones, while Nvidia is doing it with its graphics cards. Intel is the next in the “Halo” line, come 2008.
lol saw that thought it was interesting, cant wait for this .. hopefully this will bring GFX's price down

Intel can't loose. This project is mostly for showing their superiority in the chip marked and not just for profits. I don't think they will fail...

Intel got an advantage that can counter any technology lack. Manufactoring capability and advances. So it would roughly be like a 65nm(55nm optical) vs 45nm process. Along with better and cheaper production.

The fun is if the design is a winner too. Then it will dominate any competition fast.

My main hope with this is tho, that we can get rid of the super power hungry GPUs once and for all.

I would say the major problems will still rest on driver development.

At this point I would venture a guess that the actual GPU uArch is more then capable at matching if not totally beating AMD/Nivida. It all depends on all the new folks at our Visual Computing Group (some of which is located at the same site as me, I just haven't been able to strike up a conversation with them) being able to put together a fully functional dx10.1/11 3D driver that hopefully even scales to more then one card. You know how hard that's been for AMD/Nvidia to do since the release of Vista......

I think that basicaly M$, Intel, and IBM should join forces.

I spoke with some Intel guys recently and they all expect this to be a beast of their card. Won't doubt them either: their knowledge is unmatched when it comes to PC hardware and they've been good with supporting their platforms in the past. It's expected halfway through 2008 with likely street dates in Q3/Q4 of 08 and they fully expect it to shake up the GPU industry.

Oh please--this can only go down-hill if Intel wins. Please--just let them match nVidia and ATI's performance without raising prices above $400 for ultra-high-end. Force the prices down--thats all I ask.

Agreed..No matter what you have you want the next latest, greatest item.
I'm sitting here with a Q6600 that will bench at over 4000 and runs loaded 24/7 at 3600, 2 clovertown machines that do the same at over 3150 and a little dual sossaman machine that is one of those almost perfect designs and what am I doing? Drooling over Hipro's 4600+ on air with the QX9650, dreaming of a SkullTrail system and waiting to get a look at a dual nehalem system with 16 cores on one board!

Man... I hope it's priced low and beats ATI/NVIDIA to force a price drop for future high end models. Hmm... I can see stronger integrated graphics coming after. HTPC/SFF fans rejoice!

this will surely boost the gpu industry the next years! nice a third player is always.....
Nvidia's Fermi GTX480 is broken and unfixable,Hot, slow, late and unmanufacturable
As we have been saying since last May, Fermi GF100 is the wrong chip, made the wrong way, for the wrong reasons.

What's wrong with their drivers that makes them not even decent? If anything, they've done a great job wringing performance out of a part not meant for serious gaming.
    That's the biz, sweetheart.
