First Details of Windows 7 Emerge

    From Slashdot:
Some small but significant details of the next major release of Windows have emerged via a presentation at the University of Illinois by Microsoft engineer Eric Traut. His presentation focuses on an internal project called "MinWin," designed to optimize the Windows kernel to a minimum footprint, and for which will be the basis for the Windows 7 kernel.

Dont think so. Vista only took so long time, because they basicly had to restart in the middle of the project.

maximize the bloat and then minimize it...interesting marketing strategy. it sounds a bit like the tiny xp philosophy and should help out notebooks.

I never thought I'd even get to hear such strong words for a Microsoft OS. Are they smoking pot or something?

Hope this OS appears ASAP so I don't have to use Vista for long. 3 years is such a long time, guess I'll end up using the slowass Vista for 2 years or so only cuz of DX10.

I wonder if they are going to continue with the Whistler->Longhorn->Blackcomb naming scheme.

You don't need a sig to impress people. The ones who impress that easily aren't worth the effort- and the ones who don't, won't care either way.

What I'm wondering is if this is the technology we were promised with Vista, where when running games all non-essential system processes are shut down, to emulate running a game like back in the DOS days where the only services running are the game itself and drivers. I really hope so.

Sounds like a knee jerk reaction over the complaints that Vista is too bloated. Kinda going one extreme to another. I wouldn't be supprised to see some of this rhetoric slow down over time and we'll end up somewhere in between Vista and XP.

Personally, I like Vista. It has a few bugs, but so did XP when it first came out. A few years ago most of the AMD people on this site were running win2000 and refused to move to XP. XP was just too buggy and AMD cpu were quicker on win2000. If things go as usual, when the new OS comes out in 3 years people will be loving Vista and refusing to go with windows 7.

in my opinion they should only have one sku of the win7, and then simply have a few checkboxes during install which bloatware you want and which not resulting in either fast basic os for my gaming pleasure or bloatware for my granny.. you get the idea...

I think that's a great idea. Better yet would be to have an option in windows to turn all of it off. That way you can have the bloatware for normal usage and then be able to have a stripped down version for game, etc.

Yea I fully agree with you. That's what I'd wanna see more of. Different options you can choose among when installing the OS so you don't have to install them at all.

Of course this can be done by yourself too and also I'd like to point out nLite/vLite for this but would be a good step forward if M$ themselves gave more choises for the customers how to configure the OS. Some of us just doesn't want a bunch of crap installed. My computer usage is very basic (browse XS forums, play games, listen to music, watch some videos sometimes ) and could do without majority of the crap that gets installed really. I run like 22 - 25 services most often now in XP and then 2 of those are for Antivirus. I rather have as much resources free that can be dedicated to what I use instead. I give a crap about fancy guis like aero, I use classic windows theme myself.

Cool, I can skip Vista altogether. I like my 16 processes in XP, with the OS still fully functional for me needs

If they can pump this out in the next 3 years, I might never have to upgrade to Vista. That would be fine with me.............

Would love to see a customizable Windows where I had the options of cutting it all back to a minimum within the installer rather than having to rip the damn installer to bits with a 3rd party application. I, for one, welcome our lean, mean overlords/OS.
