Good, now I get to skip over Vista completely Hopefully we'll see a 10% performance gain instead of drop (ie. Vista) with the new Windows in games and benchmarks.

there is still some hope
i just don't want to give up the snappiness of windows version 2003
i got xp63 on my pc and server 2003 32bit on my laptop (lack of 64bit drivers...) , and i LOVE it...
i dropped vista after it failed to finish copying my backup to the ext hdd (kaspersky+ 16k+ files problem....) and i had to setup xp on my second array to get my data out of the system
maybe SP1 can bring me over to VISTA

If this OS comes out early enough for me to skip Vista then I'll forgive M$ for making Vista to begin with.
A small kernel footprint would b great but right now its just 2 early to really draw any conclusions.
It wouldn't be surprising tho since the future of OS's are going mobile.
Like everyone else here I'd like to see this soon so I can skip vista but MS isn't stupid enough 2 release it 2 close 2 vista.
Hopefully they'll have 2 release it sooner so that they don't fall behind in the mobile market.

Good point there. I guess that's the most reasonable explanation why the king of bloatware and "family computer concept" would suddenly start talking kernel optimization.
Well perhaps their eyes have finally opened and other freeware OS with a very light footprint starts gaining popularity, perhaps they'd finally realize what many people would want. Well I hope...

If all people would share opinions in an objective manner, the world would be a friendlier place
It's unlikely that we will be so lucky.
The majority of Microsoft users really don't care if the OS is 2 gig or 20. They upgrade OS when they upgrade computer and since storage is cheaper they get more of it when they upgrade anyway so it makes no difference to them.
It may start small, but watch it expand. Microsoft will play to it's biggest customer base who like to see all the pretty, pointless things that serve an unnecessary purpose.
If Microsoft go both ways, releasing a speed optimised version just running vital services and a bloated version then it would be a double win and us, the performance computers would be overjoyed but it's incredibly unlikely.
i think you'll find they do. A customer of our's has between 500 - 1000 pc's / laptops and i can tell you now that they definatly would NOT like to upgrade all there hard drives if the OS install got any bigger. Same goes with school's too
Perhaps not now. But this new windows won't be released for at least 3 years and storage gets cheaper year on year, not to mention that I doubt your client will instantly want to upgrade to the new OS. And by that time, perhaps 4+ years from now, chances are your client will have upgraded with more space...
quite true.... they only upgraded to windows xp about 2 years ago ... from windows 95 no less
(i wouldnt like to buy as many licences as they had)
Gamers who wants to skip vista coz of a few performance hits will miss out a lot of dx 10 optimized games.

Yeah, but then they will be all enabled by default, and when shipped with OEM, yeah.
I mean, it sounds cool.
But, how about Microsoft stops switching from extremes of GUI, and focus on pure performance.
Is it me, or isn't like, the first impression is the greatest?
Well, stop taking the approach of "oh we will fix it in a couple of months, atleast some things work" "first impressions".
I may switch to Vista due to DX10.
I use to go to a forum called "GamerzPlanet", and I will never forget.
A 40 year old woman, named gameuser, who was amazingly talented at coding ASM, had a strict belief that Windows 98 was the way to go, and she still uses it to this day.

Yeah, I've heard that Vista would be the last monolithic OS microsoft releases for the desktop market. The next one will be highly modular, with most of the basic modules released early, and more added later.
Sigs are obnoxious.
Xp is good for me too.at 16/42/32 processes
I got noting gained by installing vista, maybe more frustratings
