Would anybody here actually buy a Gateway or any prebuilt ?

But I do know a bunch of other people who were able to pick up a Dell with a Q6600 for under $650 a few months back.

Because we either use rackmounted 1U or homemade that gets OCed.

In terms of WCG, its not good unless you cant build your own from a price/performance view.

Perhaps, but my reason for asking why you guys aren't here yet is that it's generally well known that you can build a quad core pc for MUCH less than that

I think I'll make a trip there next time I'm out and run a CPUz, from USB stick, to see what's really in it. I'm pretty sure you could build it yourself for less....

What is for sure is you could spend about 300 more and get a machine that can rackmount and will be capable of wicked clocks.

Don't get me wrong here. For someone who does not wish to build their own and wants to crunch, we would most CERTAINLY welcome these machines on the team. It would produce around 10-11k points a day. Nothing to sneeze at. The only caution I would throw out is that the purchaser would have to watch the cooling. We burn our machines 24/7 at 100% CPU load. It's very hard on machines. (You can set up a profile to go less, but very few do... )

**Small Advertisement** We welcome any kind of hardware on the team. I have my daughter's machine, a P4 Northwood, crunching 24/7 on her own account. Come on over to WCG and look around. We always like new members. Working on disease treatments and cures is a very good cause. Thanks...

    Regards,
    Bob

Best I could do ... it won't be as nice as that Gateway (less software and no card reader)

    $76.99 - ANTEC NSK4480 MINI TOWER SILVER
    $279.00 - INTEL CORE 2 QUAD Q6600 2.4 GHz 1066MHz
    $122.00 - ASUS P5K-VM SKT.775 INTL G33
    $54.50 - OCZ DDR2 2GB (2x1024M) PC2-5400 Dual Channel Value Series 5-5-5-10
    $95.00 - Western Digital 400GB SATA 1.5Gb s 7200rpm 16MB
$30.99 - LITEON 20X20 DVDRW BLACK DUAL RAM BULK
$119.99 - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit - English

    Total $778
    (infonec.com - $CND + taxes (14% here))

I'd have to say for office use, its pretty darn good deal and add in a nice video card it make for a "decent" gaming rig. (dare I say)

The only pre-built system I would purchase is laptop simply because there are literally little to none suppliers of laptop barebone.

But let's face it. This is XS forum. Majority of us know how to build PC and even servers. But people outside of this forum, including majority of my friends and even my parents don't know dime about PC. They will not hesitate to buy pre-built systems with warranty.

it's the reason i posted this news item...i was thinking someone could past this to a friend who was interested in buying a pre-built with warranty; like for a HS or college student although i know a laptop would better fit most of their needs.
