on that note, I hope it's true and I hope I can get a nice 16% boost for free
It matter not what they tried to unlock it to, the simple fact is that they can't unlock anything on them for the simple reason that they can't. If it were possible to unlock ANYTHING on a 8800GTS it would be all over the internet by now. There's nothing wrong with dreaming, but don't get your hopes up.

How are they going to differentiate the new cards from the old? If I was buying a new 8800GTS say 1 month from now, I think I would want to know if this was one of the new cards with 112 SP, or some of the old stock with 96.

Hmm can't see any logic in keeping the 8800GTS name tag.
    Why not 8900GTO or 8850GTS....

Now all the 8800GTS reviews wil be misleading vs the newer cards...

I don't believe it ... smells like BS to me. It just makes no sense to release another version of a card already on the market without making any changes to the name of the card. All it would do is cause confusion. When in the history of Nvidia have they ever done this before ??

If they release a new card with 112 stream processors and call it a 8800GTS it will be a PR nightmare for Nvidia. I think that they will change the name to something else when it's launched. For one thing, what if a person that already has a 96sp 8800GTS decides he wants another for SLI and upon him buying it and installing it he finds that they will not work in SLI because they are not architecturally the same? We al know that you can't mix and match GPUs in SLI. Just like a GTX and a GTS are not compatible to one and other for SLI regardless of them using the same G80 core. I think the new card will be called the 8800GTO if I had to guess.....

This doesn't sounds logical. This would put the GTS to close to the GTX, while some sources allready comfirmed the GTX wont be changed.

No the 8800GTX wont be changed, but if they go ahead with a 89X0 series, then give the GTX 156 (or some multiple of 12) shaders and the GTS 112...

they have a max of 168 on board so they could simply unlock everything while they are at it..

They aren't going to unlock anything on the 8800GTX cards. They do not have 168 shaders to begin with anyway. If they were to release a 168 shader card it would not be an 8800 series card. Think about it, if they did that then they would also have to do the same for the Ultra. It's just not going to happen. If anything of that magnitude were to happen they would be called a different name, like the 8900 series, but it is too late in the hour for the 8 series to be thinking of a refresh. This is how technology moves people. Remember when Nvidia launched the 7900GT? It was as fast and even faster than a 7800GTX but for about half the cost. And then how about the 7900GTO vs the 7900GTX?

Why do people always panic and assume that a business is going to give you more performance for free? They are a business, if you want to stay at the top you have to pay to play. Plain and simple. If there is a new card with 112sp it will be called something different than a 8800GTS and the people that have a 96 sp GTS aren't going to get anything for free.

Don't know, i'm sure nvidia has done tests with this ,with the upcoming X2900XT in mind, back then ofcourse..

And it was a XIP around here that posted the info about the 168 on board.

I don't care who it was. They do not have 168 sp units on board.

You don't have to repeat things twice. It doesn't have 168sp fine

    I just bought a 96sp 8800GTS a month ago..

If they are gonna do this I bet the 8800GTX/Ultra and GTS 640mb 96sp hit EOL within a week of release, this also means a new high end card is coming.

8800GTS 112 = GTX core with 1 disabled Pipe and 4 disabled ROP No price cut
8800GTS 96 will then be limited to the 320MB cards

8X00GTX/Ultra with 192-256SP is released with a GTS part released once the cache of 8800GTS 112sp is run dry.

The GTX gets about 20 over the GTS cards and it has a bigger memory interface on top of like 34 sp, this new gts will be the same only have like 18 sp so im thinking the performance will only go up so little you wouldnt really notice it.

If the current 640's can be unlocked to the full 112 SP then yay for us if not oh well. I wont be testing this myself or even trying it until i know there is no real danger. Rmember the 6800GT's ? How people were unlocking the 6800 N/U's to the 6800GT's at least partially, same with the 7800GT and GS, im pretty sure itll work.

The only people IMO you should be fealing sorry for is not the 640mb users but the 320mb ones. I remember when this card came out and people werel ike "oh the speed is just the same as the 640mb card and the extra memory is useless" look now ? The 320mb is about 5fps or more behind the 640mb model not much now but imagine when the new 640 comes out ? 10+ fps more i bet you then the 320 version on top of that nvidia is releasing a new card the GT to replace the 320

The 320mb GTS is being replaced by the GT so no they wont continue these cards. Im betting like most people the new GTS 640 is just a card unlocked to 112SP not a GTX. Its was the same thing with the 6800's and 7800's why not the 8800's ?

The one real thing im wondering is this.. Are these new GTS's going to be compatible in SLI with the older 640 ones ? I mean if they arent then people are gonna go crazy specially when they are calling this a GTS 640
well because the cores are totally different and they laser lock them now. you can't unlock sp's only the factory when they make them.

i will be interested to see how much extra performance is yield because of the extra shadders

New hardware releases all the time. People shouldn't be mad that a new card released that's faster than the 8800GTS just because it might have the same name. That just makes things confusing for new buyers, but established owners shouldn't be affected.

It would be like somebody buying a 2900 Pro and then the 2950 Pro comes out at the same price. The only person you have to be mad at is yourself.

To the people that think the shader clusters are in a group of 12 or whatever...
They are in groups of 16... GTS has 6clusters, GTX has 8, new GTS has 7.

The realistic number of shaders on the next card is 128, 144 and 160.
Going much farther past that would just be a little too ridiculous right now.
