Hey guys, which processor should i get for my asus p5e?
    Q9450 or e8400

I'm using my comp for games ( COd4, Crysis, bioshock, etc)
and some other minor apps (office, and other school related crap)

    I'm gonna be doing a mild overclock - say 400 -420 fsb
Which processor is the better deal?

    AsusP5E, 8800gtx, 2gig corsair pc2 8500 (1066mhz)
    currently e6600 @3.4 ghz

    any answer will be appreciated
    thanks

The E8400 is the best processor for the money right now. It's cool, easily overclocks like a deamon, and is only $200 !! And it's 45nm! You can't go wrong.

Why buy a much more expensive quad when nearly every game can not benefit from 4 cores? Now, if you use applications that can utilize 4 cores and you have the $$$, they go for it. In that case, I personally would get the Yorkfield 45nm Quad.

I just ordered an E8400 2 hours ago to replace my E6600. I do absolutely nothing that a quad would help me out with, so I went for raw clock speed. Not to mention I'll be able to sell my E6600 and recoup a lot of that $$.

Where can I get 0601? It's not on ASUS' site. My E8400 gets here tomorrow.

    Trouble with Vdroop

I did a pencil mod a while back and had no Vdroop running my E6750. Now that I have a Q6600, I'm getting .01 Vdroop under load. Do I need to add more lead or is the Q6600 just too much for a pancil mod to control?

While some may disagree with this method, I actually used a conductive ink pen to do my vdroop mod. I have ZERO vdroop and my P5E is rock solid.

Hello, this is my first post here and I would like to share some results and get some help. I have tried the vdroop mod in my p5e and now I got some confusing results with the vcore of the quad. Before the mod, at 9*333 the q6600 needed 1,264v and 1,224v in idle-load to get stable with prime95, and now needs only 1,200v that is the same in idle and load after the vdroop mod, so I thought the same should happens at higher speed and the quad should need less vcore but don´t.. L. At 8x400 before was 1,288-1,248v and now is stable with 1,264v, and at 8*425 before was 1,376-1,328v and now needs 1,352v, so the temps under load are a bit higher. Mayby someone here have a similar issue and know why this happens. Thanks in advance

I just got myself P5E and Q6600. Is there any BIOS tweak guide for this board? Can I use the Supreme FX II sound card on other boards?

Hello guys, this motherboard has been giving me lots of headaches. The latest bios 0605 seems to have solved the memory error problems. However it seems that my conroe is not running stable with the system. Ive tried 2 e4400 and a q6600 in which would fail prime95. However memtest doesnt return any more errors.

Is it possible that the current bios is to maximise the 45nm compatibility whilst at the same time causing problems for the 65nm ones? Anyone here whose got a q6600 (conroe) that reverted to the 0201 bios and solved their problems? I dont want to keep on messing about this motherboard anymore as i have wasted a lot of time already. Anyone with similar experience would be really helpful.

You've tried 3 CPU's and you still get Prime95 erorrs. Unless they are all overheating (you did check that right), this means there is NOTHING wrong with your CPU (move on to something else).

Memory: Tested OK, but did you try different memory?
Power Supply: Did you test voltages or use a PS tester? Did you try another PS?
Motherboard: You may just have a bad MB

Since you were having memeory problems earlier, the first thing I would do is try different memory. If you were getting memory errors, regardless of bios, something is flakey with your memory. You have to try new memory, just like you tried new CPU's (which I'm sorry to say was really a waste of time because CPU's are rarely ever faulty). Prime95 errors can be caused by memory, motherboard or power supply problems.

    Good Luck!

I have tried 2 different memories, ran memtest using a single memory stick each time. The funny thing is my brothers memory instantly shown errors in memtest when i had 05xx BIOS and i put it back to his PC and ran memtest there and the errors were gone. I read that this was not a lone issue as a lot of people seem to have the problem so i updated to the 0607 beta bios, you think the beta bios is causing me issues?

0607 allows all my memory sticks to pass memtest for one cycle at least. However prim95 is my problem now. Small FFT seems to be running ok (that CPU hardcore) for an hour now. But I always fail on the Large and blend test. Im starting to think it cannot be the CPU, It cannot be the memory, and cannot be the PSU since this PSU gave me no problems 2 days ago in my old 650i system.

I guess its time to test 0605 bios and see from there. If i still get problems then I am seriously considering RMAing this board. Jeebus, i am so unlucky with mobos, my last 3 doesnt allow me to reach a good FSB speed at all... and now it gets even worse

Sorry to hear about your problems. It may very well be a bad MB. What brand and model memory have you tried?

You can also try bios 0605 as well as the oldest bios that will support your CPU. Find out from this chart:
    http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...n-us&model=P5E

One more thing to try. Set your dram voltage in the bios to the max voltage written on the label of your memory stick (minus .05). Default voltage may not be enough! I'm assuming that everything else is at default when you've been troubleshooting.

yeah i always put the ram voltage manually, given that this motherboard doesnt have sensors for RAM voltage. Ive tried three different brands, Crucial tracer 8500+, and two 6400 from Geil and Corsair... so would rule out memory definitely. Ive just flashed to 0605 and running prime95 now.. hopefully its will come out alright if it doesnt then RMA the board is all ive got left to do. (well after trying 0201 first anyway.

But the thing is a lot of peoples sigs say they have a q6600 and bios 0605/0602 and theyre running fine with it. Guess im unlucky

Weldzilla, nice overclock at 4.6Ghz - hope it lasts. Running an E8400 at 1.58v in Windows is crazy IMO. Your CPU will surely degrade. I will admit you have guts. You're in my prayers for sure! Though it's amazing how well the E8400 overclocks - best CPU I've ever owned.

See "E8400 Crapped out! YAY!!!!" Thread:
    http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...d-out-yay.html

Notes: E8400 max recommended operational voltage is 1.365v. Absolute Maximum voltaage is 1.45v after which "neither functionality nor long-term reliability can be expected. Moreover, if a device is subjected to these conditions for any length of time then, when returned to conditions within the functional operating condition limits, it will either not function, or its reliability will be severely degraded."*

A couple processors appear to have gone bad on there own?
I would have to say, "Allegedly", as I wasn't there. I have run these 2 e8400's for 3 months now both at over 1.5488V with no problems. As recently as this week I set new highs on 3D marks and 32M pi.

Contrary to popular belief, "The Sky is not Falling".

Keep them cool and they are just fine.

What do you know of the failed system?

My ? is, what temp did it run at ? idle and load.

How do we know that the guy wasn't running it at 1.7 or higher half the time.
I have found when hardware goes bad most people blame it and just lie about how it happened.
I work on these systems daily. 90% of those who bring me their dead computer have no clue what is wrong and yet they still tell you some B.S. story.
rather than just say they screwed it up.
I have found a penny lodged to the motherboard before. I have found the motherboard and vid card and the whole inside of the case to be sticky from the pop that was spilled down the top fan
hole but they deny it to this day.

My fav. is the guy that called me cuz his system would run for just a few minutes and then restart over and over til it would not go into windows before it would reboot.
I asked him if he kept his case clean and free of dust as this would build up and act as a thermal blanket over the heatsink and processor. He got offended over the phone'
and told me his system was perfectly clean and was regularly cleaned. He hung up on me well the next morning his wife asks if she can drop it off for me just to look at. She needs this computer badly. So, I tell her to drop it by and I will look at it that evening.
    This is what I found!!!

Yup just another piece of junk computer that had been a pos for along time.
She knew it was bad cuz it had a stupid Intel processor in it.

Yes it is a Dell with a 2.8C in it. That was over a year ago and it is running fine for them today.
Their 14 year old cleans it monthly as she just loves it...

First Rule it is never the USERS fault, Ever!!! When hardware fails....
Well I chew people's asses regurlarly. I do not need their F'd up systems to make a living so I call them like I see them!!!

And as a rule when hardware dies prematurely it is HUMAN error!!!
whether they admit it or not!

Data sheets mean nothing to me!! what do you expect Intel to say?? They do not want to replace any more proceesors than they have to. They want ti void every warranty possible and so on and so forth... Yey they build you a mother board that will according to their own data sheets, wipe out there precessors. I take all that with a grain of salt

Brahmzy you should have no probs with that just downgrade it with Asus update. By clicking the appropriate tab under options. and just do it in windows. that is how I always perform the task.

I'll just keep running fast and free thankyou.

Webzilla, you may be right. But with the 45nm processors being so new I'm just afraid - a scared little sissy boy. But I'm happy with my 4.0Ghz...for now at least. Good Luck with 4.6Ghz. and do let us know if it degrades at all in the future. I guess only time will tell with these E8400's.

That dust ball of a computer is a hoot - I've seen some just as bad in my day.
