so what will it be 8800GT or this new 8800GTS? this is really confusing me. i am on the other hand is thinking of updating my 8800ultra possibly with four RV670 if ATI will allow quadfire. but who will be faster rv670 or this new 8800gts?

Basically it looks like the 8800GT is going to replace the 8800GTS 320 and it will have 512 MB RAM w/ 256-bit memory bandwidth.

The GTS 640 is being upgraded to 112 shaders but will otherwise remain the same with some possible tweaks like PCIE 2.0 etc. to push it up a bit to close the gap between the GTX/Ultra and current GTS640.

If that is indeed what happens, we'll have Ultra > GTX > GTS > GT again.

    1) The market wants a mid-range card that can actually perform. The 8600GTS is a joke and ATI just released the 2900PRO and will soon release the 55nm RV670. Jumping into the next high-end while leaving the mid-range market (where most of the money is made, as well as where most OEM contracts will be had) would be disastrous, esp. if you hand it away to your archrival. Keep in mind that more and more DX10 games are coming out soon (and have been now) and so the market for DX10 compatible cards is growing.
or ti could be brilliant as there is a surplus of DX9 card which need to be gotten rid of and having competition with your own products is never good...

what will the release of the 9800 do to 8800gtx prices? I'm leaning towards the 8800 gt (g92) when it comes out but if the 8800 gtx prices drop enough, I'll plan on that.

So when can we expect this new revision of the GTS 640?
Will it be later than the new GT?

I'd be willing to bet January of 08, as soon as they can clear out the current 640 gts and the g92 starts racking in profits

and this is supposed to be between 8800gts and gtx, correct? looks like it should be a nice card, i'd drop stock cooling before i even fired it up though.

Yes, GF8800GT seems to be nice performance-mainstream card but where is new 1 Tflop Highend GPU which was said here by some people it will be released this year??

Other thing is that G92 is rumoured to have 289mm^2. It seems quite big for me especially if it is only 64SP GPU wiht probably 16TMU and 16ROPs. G80 is 484mm^2 and it uses 90nm process.

Does your G80 number include the NVIO?

289mm2 is a calc based on a GTX type of card. So you cant use that for anything, unless they took a GTX and just shrinked it.

I don't think you understand what he said. He said that G92 is rumored to be 289mm^2.

I dont think you understand where that rumour came from.

Its all done with speculation from the G80 die size from theinq. And with wrong math aswell.

A 8800GTX dumb shrink would be about about 250mm2 at 65nm unlike their "result".

If G92 is indeed 289mm2. Then there will be some surprises inside.

Ask nVidia. But if thats its size, then its a 128SP or more card most likely.

But thats impossible because Nvidia called G92 as 8800GT, and performance is inferior to 8800GTS.
Also they priced the card lower witch means lower performance.

Unless it is unlock-able to 128sp and overclocks like an SOB...

you forget that the card will have a 256bit bus and the 8800gts will get a bump up to 112sp's so the gts should still win because of the bandwidth.

The 6600GT beats most of the x800 series, and the 6600 only has a 128bit bus... it all depends on clocks, architecture and overclocking,
