Intel 45nm fab to open in 45 days

In 45 days, Intel will open its first high-volume facility for building chips that use a 45-nanometer manufacturing process.

The facility, called Fab 32, is a new one built in Chandler, Ariz., said spokesman Nick Knupffer, in an interview here at the VMworld conference. Most of Intel's current chips are built with a process that permits 65-nanometer circuitry elements, but the new 45-nanometer process will mean more circuits can fit on the same area of silicon wafer.

Intel currently builds 45-nanometer processors at its D1D facility in Oregon, but Fab 32 will be geared for high-volume manufacturing.

Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices has just begun its transition to 65-nanometer processors.

Someone pointed out that AMD went to 65nm in Dec. 06'.

That hardly seems like, "Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices has just begun its transition to 65-nanometer processors."

However, Intel still rules the roost for now.

I´m mostly interested in the lower power consumption. Specially now competitions aint as rough. Stuff like the 40W 3.16Gfz dualcore and such I really like.

I´m simply too old I guess to listen on 5000rpm+ fans anymore...

Remembering the amount of Intel fanboys that said and had the dumb notion intel didn't had 45nm already because didn't need to, i won't say it's good news for the AMD fanboys, but funny news.

This is good news for anyone who uses computers, 45nm = higher clock and lower power consumption
Agreed, it's good news for everyone. AMD and Intel just bring competition to the market and that lowers prices, we can't lose.

talk about highend graphics cards nowadays, they should worry about consumption, not 65nm Brisbanes

Totally off topic, but yes there is indeed a "ban" option on the board. I know, Movieman recently gave me a 3 day vacation.

AMD launched 65 nm in Dec 06, we saw actual chips in mid January, AMD finished their transistion of Fab 36 to all 65 nm by mid Q2 as I recall...

The report in inaccurate, AMD has a matrue 65 nm process and is in full production.

^^^^ You can probably pick to ignore certain users posts....Anyone know how big 65nm and 90nm are compared to a dime?

Also i see this as good news although as NN said its inaccurate, as i seem to recall the AMD sitting in my box is 65nm and i've had it for a good while

lol. I wouldn't go as far as to say AMD has a mature 65nm process... they still have some feats to conquer before you can say it's a mature process.

considering that AMD has better 65nm yields than Intel does and that Intel claims they have a mature process.
There are only two logical conclusions:
    1) AMD's 65nm process is mature and Intel is lying (marketing bull)
    or
    2) Neither AMD nor Intel's 65nm Process is mature and thus Intel's previous statements about their 65nm process is a lie (Lying to stock holders)

Now, which do you believe is more true

So what do you think being able to pull more working Dies off a wafer means?
