    Encrypted storage hd now can't access it

    Hello guys so i encrypted my storage HD with windows encryption.Now 2 days ago I had to format and re-install my XP and now i can't aceess the files in the storage hd," access denied.Any ideas?

    You used EFS (exploere->right-click->properties) or BitLocker?
    I'll assume EFS. Your only bet is some password cracking software (Hiren's Boot CD might have some, not sure). You definitely won't be able to access it from Windows.

    You confused me.I used EFS how do i use the software, and what kind of software?

    Look for "EFS recovery software" on Google.
    I'd know how to handle paid cases, but not DIY (do-it-yourself) ones

    The thing is this software wont work without decryption keys

    As far as I know, it's pretty well unbreakable. At least, I've never heard of it being broken (not that I've done any extensive searching on this). Personally, I think you're pooched.

    For the future, you can export a copy of your encryption key to, for example, a flash drive, CD, etc as a backup just in case.
    Dual CCIE (Route\Switch and Security) at your disposal. Have a Cisco-related or other network question? My PM box is always open.

    I got a new idea in the works .I'm trying to recover my old os files,pass it to an additional hd and try to boot it so i get access to those keys would you guys know were the keys are located and and they are called?

    well mathematically speaking it should take a Conroe about 2 thousand years to crack it. So it isn't unbreakable but rather it would take so much effort that it probably isn't worth it

    you're serious? windows implemented such hard cypher?
    i was told from one techie at security conference that any folder/file(not whole disk) thats encrypted ain't that hard to decipher thanx to ntfs nature.
